Driver Falls Asleep at the Wheel, Crashes into Roadside Stall, Killing One & Injuring One
Pictures from responders. A pickup truck driver who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel crashed into a roadside stall in Udon Thani, leaving one woman dead and another seriously injured. The crash occurred at approximately 13:20 on 12 March near the U-turn at Ban Phasuk, on the outbound lane of Mittraphap Road (Udon Thani–Khon Kaen), in Phasuk Subdistrict, Kumphawapi District. Local police from Kumphawapi Police Station, along with emergency responders from the Prachatham Rescue Unit, rushed to the scene. Authorities found a white Toyota box truck had crashed into a makeshift stall selling khao lam (bamboo sticky rice), completely destroying it. The vehicle had then veered off the road and ended up in a nearby rice field, severely damaged. Two victims, a mother and daughter who ran the stall, were found injured. The mother, identified as Suwanna 48, suffered severe head trauma, multiple fractures, and was unconscious at the scene. Her 19-year-old daughter, Rassamee sustained injuries as well. Both were transported to Kumphawapi Hospital, where Suwanna was later pronounced dead. Police interrogated the driver, Supakit 23, a resident of Mu 13, Mueang Yang Subdistrict, Chamnni District, Buriram. He stated that he was transporting asphalt from Nong Khai to Samut Prakan, accompanied by a passenger. As he approached the U-turn, he reportedly experienced a momentary blackout due to drowsiness, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The truck then ploughed into the roadside stall, striking both vendors before crashing into the rice field. Both the driver and his passenger suffered minor injuries. Police have charged Supakit with reckless driving causing injury and death and will proceed with legal action. -- 2025-03-14 -

Police Bust 9 Locations in Crackdown on ‘Laughing Gas’ Balloon Trade

Police officers from the Consumer Protection Division (CPD) in collaboration with the Human Trafficking Division (HTD) carried out a series of coordinated raids on 11 to 12 March, targeting the illegal production and sale of nitrous oxide (commonly known as ‘laughing gas’) balloons. The operation followed an extensive investigation into suppliers operating on Khao San Road, in Bangkok. After gathering intelligence on the source of the gas, its storage locations, and the distribution network, including its sale through online platforms, the authorities executed search warrants at nine sites across Bangkok and the surrounding provinces. The raids took place in Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, and several districts in Bangkok, including Chatuchak, Bang Bon, Wattana, Suan Luang, Wang Thong Lang, Sathorn, and Khlong Toei. During the raids, a total of 46,246 items, were seized. This included 40,975 canisters of nitrous oxide gas, 3,698 balloons for filling with the gas, and 1,591 cylinders used for dispensing the gas. Authorities confirmed that these actions violated the Food Act of 1979, which prohibits the sale of products with incorrect labelling, punishable by fines up to 30,000 baht. Additionally, selling nitrous oxide for recreational inhalation without proper authorisation falls under the Narcotic Act of 1970, with penalties including up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 10,000 baht. Pol. Gen. Prajuab Wongsuk, Deputy Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, expressed concern over the illegal distribution of nitrous oxide and reiterated the importance of law enforcement’s role in preventing harm to public health. “The National Police are committed to preventing the illegal distribution of dangerous substances like nitrous oxide and e-cigarettes, which remain banned and pose significant health risks,” he said. “This operation is part of an ongoing effort to address such issues and protect the public from harmful substances.” Authorities also raised alarm about the dangers of inhaling nitrous oxide, commonly used in balloons for recreational purposes. Nitrous oxide displaces oxygen in the body, leading to potential brain damage, unconsciousness, and even death if misused. “The substance can cause dizziness, nausea, and loss of motor control, which could lead to injuries or fatalities,” warned Suphawadee Teerawatsakul, director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She advised the public, particularly tourists visiting entertainment areas, to avoid using laughing gas due to its severe effects on the brain and nervous system. The CPD is continuing its investigation into the source and distribution of the seized nitrous oxide. Officials are focusing on preventing further illegal sales and are monitoring online platforms where the substance may still be offered for sale. The police have also urged citizens to report any illegal distribution or suspicious activity involving nitrous oxide or other harmful substances. The crackdown follows previous successful operations against the illegal sale of laughing gas and vaping products, with authorities reiterating that the public should stay informed about the risks associated with recreational substance misuse. -- 2025-03-14 -

Pictures from responders. A collision occurred in Trang province when a passenger train collided with a pickup truck at a railway crossing, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries. The incident took place at 14:40 on 13 March, in Bang Mak Subdistrict, Kantang District, when the Kantang–Bangkok Apiwat train struck a pickup truck attempting to cross the tracks. At the scene, a black half-cab pickup truck was found severely damaged, with the rear section completely wrecked. Authorities confirmed that four people died at the scene, while six others sustained injuries. Among the victims, six were inside the vehicle, while four had been sitting in the back of the truck. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crash and seeing bodies thrown from the vehicle in different directions. “I was selling goods nearby when I heard the impact. It was terrifying. I ran over and saw people thrown from the truck, it was shocking,” one witness recounted. The train driver stated that he had sounded the horn as the train approached the crossing, but the pickup truck failed to stop in time. Due to the speed and weight of the train, he was unable to bring it to an immediate halt, resulting in the collision. The truck’s driver survived the crash, but those sitting in the back were thrown from the vehicle, suffering serious injuries or fatal blows. Police Colonel Pradit Chaiphol, Chief of Kantang Police Station, revealed that the pickup truck was transporting workers from a black tiger prawn farm. Investigations showed that the train had been approximately 200 metres from the crossing when the driver noticed the pickup approaching. Despite repeated warning signals, the driver proceeded, leading to the crash. Following the incident, both the train driver and the pickup truck driver were tested for alcohol and drugs. While no alcohol was found in their systems, the pickup driver tested positive for drugs and admitted to having taken them before driving. Authorities have charged the pickup truck driver with reckless driving causing death. Further investigations, including interviews with survivors and witnesses, are underway as legal proceedings continue. SRT confirmed that it was an illegal shortcut constructed without permission. However as it is commonly used and for safety reasons, warning signs, traffic signs, flashing lights, and warning signs on both sides had been installed, meant to increase safety for road users. -- 2025-03-14 -
