GUANGZHOU, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- China on Tuesday executed a serial killer who was convicted of murdering 11 people, including three police officers, between 1996 and 2005, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Cheng Ruilong, 37, was sentenced to death on February 22 after being convicted of murder, robbery and rape. Cheng, who was listed as one of the most wanted men in China before his arrested, was executed in Foshan City of south China's Guangdong province.

The serial killer was found responsible for killing eleven individuals between May 1996 and January 2005. He committed his series of violent crimes in several provinces in mainly southern and eastern China.

Cheng, of Guangdong, was originally charged with the murder of 13 people. However, Foshan Municipal Intermediate People's Court had to drop the number of victims in July as the bodies of a woman and her daughter who were allegedly murdered by Cheng were never recovered.

After his sentence was announced, Cheng issued an appeal against his death penalty sentence. He lost the appeal, however, and his execution was approved by the Supreme's People Court of China.

Cheng was arrested in January 2005 in Ganzhou of Jiangxi province. He was detained for robbery and used an alias, Zhou Quan, under which he was convicted to seven years of imprisonment.

After authorities identified him as Cheng, he was transferred to Foshan police for further investigations in May 2009.
