i had a sql error message come up about 10 mins. ago when i tried to access , then i went to google , and accessed and logged in via the google link.

As pointed out everytime this happens, whenever there is work to be done on the server or database, it's done early in the morning when it disrupts the least amout of people. This is why it always happens at the same time. Sorry for any inconvenience.

That being the case, couldn't any attempt to access the site during a maintenance period be redirected to a more "friendly" page that explains the situation rather than some arcane SQL error message?
