Mornington Crescent

Featured Replies

Well I thought it might be an idea to play a game of Mornington Crescent. I suggest we stick to Gardiner/Roberts '87 rules, Nidd inversions fully acceptable and see how we go from there.

To start the ball rolling, then:

Liverpool St. Station.

Is this a game only played by people from Oxford? I have never heard about it before and to be truthful when it said morningside in your title I thought this was going to be a topic about cocaine. :o

I am of course referring to the classic game 'Mornington Crescent', the rules of which one could hardly attempt to describe on a web board. I suggest you search around the BBC for more information, as this is a British game (although the French once tried to pretend they invented it by renaming it 'Eclu', a travesty for those of us who know too well how it was Mornington Crescent and not Eclu that was responsible for some of the greater international disputes of the 18th and 19th centuries).

Anyhow, given how little enthusiasm there has been so far to starting the game, I shall perform a double-back to Bethnal Green (as we are adhering to the Greenham subtleties of '87) to flush out any would be professional players lurking on the forum..

Will, you do realise it's Saturday night in Bangkok? If you turn off the computer and leave the appartment, you will find a wonderful world of alchohol and women outside waiting for you. :o

Well, sitting as I am at 7:17pm in the living room of a house on Tresco, Isles of Scilly, using a dial up modem while the clouds grow ominously over the beach (although the sailing today was fantastic so shouldnt complain..), I am about as far away from that world of women and alcohol as one could possibly be..

Bethnal Green, anyone?

Upney..hmm..cunning move even if done by accident. Let's try to keep things smooth to begin with though, so I'll begin a second position at Uxbridge to counter anything you might be planning with Upney.

So, Uxbridge.

Er, which subtlety are you attempting that move under? I've sat here and sat here but no way can I see a legal move to Grange Hill...

you are obvioulsy using different Gardiner/Roberts '87 rules to me... the move seems fine... to hard for you was it ?

To bkkmadness...

Cunning but opaque...

In that case I'll go to Eastcote

Under Gardiner rules 1987, you can't mask your real move by the creation of an intermediary or 'fakey' station name, even if it IS an anagram (brilliant anagram, though, even still). So unfortunately, bkkmadness, we have to consider your move as invalid for the duration. As you're just starting out though, we'll definitely let you off this time.

Edit: just saw Totsters brilliant move above, completely over my head as I wasn't expecting a professional to join in so soon. Objection withdrawn as I was perhaps a little rusty on the Gardiner rules after all.

So, thinking on my feet...i'll take a Croissant Overturn to Hammersmith.

My cunningness is never opaque Totty my dear boy. :o

  Next move, West Ham.

West Ham..!!

Are you sure that's right... ?

totster :D

West Ham absolutely fine, but he's letting me back you into a bit of a corner:

Elephant and Castle

I'm sure you two aren't playing fair..... I'll be back in a minute...

Too late to withdraw now, Bkkmadness! West Ham you said and we've already move on to Elephant and Castle, which puts Totster into something of a predicament..let's see how he gets out of this one!

Ok, I will play by the rules. Totster in a predicament, not so opaque now it seems my foolish friend. :D

Next move, Bow Road.

Have I sunk any battleships yet? :o

Ok....

Cockfosters

I think you'll find that's not a bad comeback... :o

totster :D

ah ok, you gotta move first right Titster?

now my turn, Bow Road!!! Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do believe it's Will's go now.... unless he can't manage it :o

Well I was foxed for a good while there, after totster's brilliant comeback. Alright but not entirely unexpected given the abundance of the 53rd edition rules. Time to spice things up with a bi-lateral three station loop (which of course now opens up the War Provisions rules 1916 (revised)). This should bring us back close to Bow Road so totster isn't completely out of the woods yet.

My move: Bow Church

I had feeling you were going to do that... but I totally forgot about the war provisions rules...

But ... using rule 12, subparagraph 1.33... I do believe I can perform a link manouver to Clapham Common.

I am quite pleased with myself

Nicely done there, although it nows means we are playing under full Nidd rules, so be careful with the moves from now on! You have all been warned!

p.s. latecomers are welcome to join in at either London Bridge or the newly added Heatrow Terminal 4 (see 2004 edition rules for full explanation of validity of the bus transfer).

Just noticed Will that you are a bedlam-er now... :D

I knew there was a reason for his latest postings. :D

Seriously lads, its Saturday night, Totsters only 30 something, I'm 28 and Will is what, 21 or something? Shouldn't we be out doing something more interesting at the moment? :o

There is nothing more interesting than MC, but trust me its raining, its a small island and the only pub on the island is full of posh knobs talking too loudly about yachts.

Well you leave me no choice but to opt for the end of the line rule and a quick save of Palace (the secret underground station for the Queen). I could have used Warren St, I suppose, but that always gets people whinging. I'm setting myself up for something big but I bet you won't spot it until too late..
