I've searched the forum postings and have learned quite a lot (thank you all), but still have questions.

My particulars: US passport; dependent of a new hire in Thailand.

We are relocating from Malaysia to Thailand. My husband (US passport) is taking a position in a Bangkok-based company, and I am self-employed, generating income only outside the country.

We are in possession of the paperwork from my husband's new employer to get the initial non-immigrant B and O visas from the Thai consulate in Kuala Lumpur. They have told us they will issue only single-entry visas.

Q1: How long is this kind of visa typically valid for?

Q2: If the visa is a short one, valid for 90 days, should we apply for extensions immediately, or do we need to wait until some threshold date (e.g., 30 days before expiration)?

Both my husband and I expect to have to leave Thailand on business within weeks of our arrival. Specifically, I will leave the country within 3 weeks, and will be away for 6 weeks.

Q3: Is it possible to get a reentry permit based on a single-entry O visa, even a short-stay one?

Q4: Are multiple-entry reentry permits available? At the airport?

For a number of reasons, we have chosen to establish our main residence on Phuket island.

Q5: Is it possible to get the same expatriate visa extensions, reentry stamps, and so on at the immigration office in Phuket Town or is it necessary to travel to Bangkok?

Q6: Is the option of getting the reentry form at the airport available only at BKK or is it also possible to get one at Phuket International airport?

Thanks in advance for whatever insights you can give me. This is all very complex and confusing to me since I have only had tourist visas to Thailand for the 13 times I've visited.

1. The visa provides a 90 day stay.

2. Work permit must be obtained first and B visa extended and your O extended. Extension is normally done during last 30 days of the entry period.

3. Yes. Even a tourist visa.

4. Yes at 3,800 baht but they only last until your current stay stamp so make more sense for most people after one year extension has been received. Don't know if multi are issued at airport or not - single are.

5. Yes. Any immigration office.

6. Don't know.
