South Korean flags burned as Taiwan rages over Asian Games incident

GUANGZHOU, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Local politicians on Thursday burned South Korean flags outside Taiwan's Sports Affairs Council after the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) rejected an appeal from the Taiwanese team after one of their competitors was disqualified in the Asian Games because she added two sensors to the heel of her socks to help score more points.

Taiwanese taekwondo athlete Yang Shu-chun, one of the nation's gold medal hopefuls, was leading her match against Vietnamese Vu Thi Hau on Tuesday before the ATU decided to check the electric sensors placed in her socks. After officials checked, she was disqualified in the women's 49-kilogram category in Guangzhou.

The Taipei Times reported that during a post-match press conference, Taiwanese and Chinese journalists began calling out insults as officials refused to translate questions as to whether the decision had been politically motivated.

Taiwanese sports fans have remained angered while politicians from the People First Party even burned South Korean flags outside Taiwan's Sports Affairs Council and smashed imported products on the floor, vowing a boycott of South Korean products before being stopped by police.
