It is rather telling to note that America is only up to 1972 in releasing diplomatic cables until now.

From what I've read, it's all pretty interesting. But like any private communication, it can cause problems because things are written with the idea that it is private. Anyone who thinks there is no harm in any of this, should open up their own personal communication to everyone - spouse, boss, friends, etc. I doubt few would like it.

It's not just diplomatic cables, there are a lot of govermental records in the USA that aren't released until many years have passed to protect the people involved. How many other countries even release them at all?

In the current round of leaks I thought it was only US state department cables. Am I wrong?

The Australian government has echoed US outrage at the publication of the embassy cables and has encouraged the US move to prosecute Mr Assange, an Australian citizen.

The actions of the US have not discouraged all countries from expressing their support for Mr Assange and WikiLeaks. Ecuador has seemingly opened its arms, and invited it to establish a home base there.

The invitation came through a comment by Ecuador's Deputy Foreign Minister, Kintto Lucas, on a website on Monday. ''We are ready to give him [Mr Assange] residence in Ecuador, with no problems and no conditions. We are going to invite him to come to Ecuador so he can freely present the information he possesses and all the documentation, not just over the internet but in a variety of public forums.''

Even though it was not Ecuador's policy to involve itself in the affairs of other countries, the worrying nature of the cables - particularly the references to Latin America - had compelled it to offer safe haven, Mr Lucas said.

Sorry, not interested in taking your bait. However, I would be interested in you giving us some examples of things they have leaked from other governments. Are you able to do that?

So in short it's not exclusively focused on the US, but it is inevitable that the US given its perceived position is the most vociferous of targets. Other's often operate on the ignore it and it'll go away, which given how some are apparently not aware of earlier activities seems to work.
