Russia and Qatar win World Cup race

Russia and Qatar will make their debuts as World Cup hosts after FIFA's 22-member panel voted to award the nations the 2018 and 2022 finals respectively.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the eagerly anticipated results in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday afternoon.

Russia beat competition from England, Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal. Deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov celebrated by saying: "You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise, we all can promise, you will never regret it. Let us make history together.''

Qatar has been awarded the 2022 World Cup finals after seeing off challenges from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the USA - taking the tournament to the Middle East for the first time.

The FIFA executive committee's decision comes as a slight surprise after the USA and Australia bids had been highly-fancied.

Qatar? <deleted>? 50 degrees C in June, no stadiums in place. England and the U.S.A. both got hosed.

The trouble with all the post defeat moaning is it just makes us English look like bad losers. We're not...we're used to it!

I think most English people just want a system which is "fair and transparent". What's the point of having inspections and economic reports if you just want to ignore them?

If FIFA wanted to "push the boundaries" and made that clear, then the likes of England etc wouldn't even bother to bid. But there are no "jolly's" - shopping trips in London, USA, Australia then are there? :whistling:

It's obvious that the whole of FIFA is corrupt and not "fit for purpose". You only have to look at their (ie Blatter's) disdain for goal-line technology...and as for his "football was invented in China" <deleted> that he came out with yesterday :bah: (According to football historians outside FIfa House, the game starts with Ebenezer Cobb Morley writing the rules of Association Football in 1863, whatever Blatter may try to claim)

And to see out current Prime Minister and future King having to brown-nose to crooks like Jack Warner (from that footballing powerhouse Trinidad & Tobago) makes me cringe...

World Cup 2026 - China...failing that North Korea, or Antarctica!

RAZZ

P.S. Very good bit on the BBC

You'll be glad that England will be hosting the rugby league world cup in 2013, then - so at least you've got something to look forward to...

Hosting the world cup in England is a great way to raise the profile of rugby league outside of New South Wales and Queensland.

Plenty support for Rugby League oop north.....saw my side sadly beaten at Old Trafford by St Helens a few years ago in the Challenge Cup final....aye a full house and could have sold out twice easily.

6th Tackle coming up. :whistling:

Trying to stay on topic, let's hope Russia qualify for the World Cup in 2013, and they can see how a competition should be organised.

Who do you reckon for the European Qualifying Slot?

Russia, Lebanon, Serbia or Italy?

If I'd been the last two years, I would be booking my annual ticket to Wembley for the Challenge Cup Final about now - apparently there are special offers on for Wire fans...

At least we didn't resort to bribing, Rin. So we can at least hold our heads high.

I just hope that Panorama really have more dirty on these utter disgraces to football and go for the jugular.

I would have loved to have seen it in the England, but we are just as guilty as bribing as the next country, Steff Blatter was to be given a £1000 a night suite at the Dorchester to watch the Olympics for his say, now withdraw.

As we know Thailand was to host England next summer, withdrawn. Thats just two of the committee members, you can bet every single person involved in the vote was offered something from England, problem was we did not bribe high enough

Because of this the scheduled first ever international friendly between England and Thailand which was due to be played in June next year has been cancelled.

This in itself is a shocking result. Also its an insult to the Thai people given the reason for the game anyway. Disgraceful behavior by the FA.

I also hope they're redoubling their efforts here. Might see a bit more support now as well. Wouldn't it be funny to see an FA spokesman commenting on the next programme? :D
