Did Revenge Backfire?

Cobra - file photo

A 51-year-old Norwegian resident of Pattaya, Mr Per Christian Lindgaard, was found dead in his apartment in the New Nordic Village complex in Soi 4 off Pratamnak Road recently. The body was found some three days after the deceased was seen taking a snake into his room, along with a glass case. He apparently intended to keep the snake as a pet.

When staff at the complex noticed a foul odour coming from Mr Lindgaard’s room they decided the snake wasn’t the source. They entered the room and found the Norwegian, who was originally from Fredrikstad, dead from an apparent snake bite on a leg. The snake, which was identified as a cobra, was found curled up next to the bed and safely removed.

Staff at the village said the deceased was a solitary man who did not socialise with other residents, was almost always intoxicated, and very belligerent. They then recounted the fact Mr. Lindgaard had been arrested in September 2009 after seriously wounding a Thai electrician employed at the village. Despite the serious nature of the crime he was able to avoid jail time. He came back to his apartment and was allegedly planning revenge on the residents. […more]

You can only imagine where he managed to get a deadly and un-defanged cobra; so he planed to use it as a weapon against other residents and which backfired, my guess is he was going to set it loose in a common area to kill or terrorize the first person unlucky enough to encounter it and then deny responsibility.. and the fact that he was able to bribe his way out of an assault charge emboldened this idiot to do something even more retarded..

as this illustrates a cobra snake venom is so deadly that it's victim doesn't even have enough time to seek medical help before he collapses and expires.. hope i never run into one of those things, or that very dangerous green snake I heard about that is native to Thailand.

Probably a King Cobra. Normal cobra usually cannot kill an adult healthy person...

But keeping a King Cobra as a pet in your appartment is somewhat over the limit! Then I prefer to sleep with 5,000 scorpions!

a king cobra--approx 5 meters full grown ???? I doubt---a cobra--or a spitting cobra-or spectacled cobra--most likely---it IS powerful-if he was a drunk his resistance would have been low----other dangerous snakes here are Krait- espesially banded krait---and the keelback, I live in Issan and in our village you encounter these types---unless you can get to the city quick--no hope--there are NO anti venom in local town hospitals---this stupid man maybe got what he deserved---meddling with these beautiful WILD creatures. Please dont tell people a cobra is not dangerous--believe me it can be.

The common black cobra venom is actually more potent than king cobra venom.

The king cobra is deadly due to shear volume of venom, but the potency is less.

Both are deadly.

I was under the impression that cobras can be found in the wild all over Thailand. I have at least one on the land next to my house here on Samui. B) The largest that I have seen in the area where I live is approx 3 meters long - I would imagine that one could do some damage to a person.

What is it with those Skandinavians?

Knew a number of them who all had one thing in common - they were always shitfaced just like apparently this chap

Boos and poisonous snakes don't mix - its like playing with a gun while drunk

Rescued a 2 meter long young python the other day from my dogs and relocated it to a large area of bushland - for Cobras I have a very sharp machete - living in BKK and even here those creatures turn up in my garden

Cobra bites are bad and can mean weeks in Hospital - the chap must have had a very unpleasant death - however, if you come across a snake with a red head - run as fast as you can as far away as possible - its a Krait and the worse kind - you will most likely die from its bite and very painfully so

A man died and because he liked a beer, like a lot of westerners do, and because he wasn't as popular as the other residents (maybe even a case of the others ganging up on him and shutting him out).

I detect from the first few posts that a lot of people seem to be rather happy that this guy is dead.

Shocking response, and to call someone who has lost their life, a moron is quite frankly disgraceful behaiviour, and karma does work, even against those who speak ill of the dead.

So quit it with the insensitive comments levelled towards an unfortunate individual. Whatever the TRUE background to the story, you should NEVER speak ill of the dead.

Remember, this story came from the gutter press, as you can clearly tell by the style of writing.

I have only ever seen two snakes in my village, a 12 inch baby which was beaten to death by my Thai partner and a 4 foot individual which was eaten with relish. Its skin got turned into a belt. I think snakes get short shrift around here

He went out and purchased the cobra because it was in a glass case and sources say he has planned revenge. Premeditation murder if he succeeded but was mostly likely too drunk to handle the snake properly and was bitten and too drunk to even know or feel it. Mostly like sat there watching T.V. until it was too late to do anything! Personally, I'm glad he's gone! he deserve what he got!

Newsite12,

Many of us Farang have problems visiting or living in Thailand and have been screwed and wrong. How many have gone out and purchased snakes to get back or try to murder them. If it was you ;who he wanted to get back at would you be defending him?

He has a history we who speak badly of him didn't create it! He made his bed and now he must sleep in it as crudely as it may seem. This snake wasn't a toy and he had intend by the eyes of the law no matter where he came from. If a Thai had done this I'm sure your response would have been 100% different.

Garbage was him, the story is simple, Man buys poison snake ( illegal ) + to plan a murder + instead he gets bit and died = he is evil moron that deserve what he got and we are to speak good about him and what he was planning?

I must agree, this guy was an idiot and cobras are deadly as just proven.

I have cobras around my house as well as red necked keelbacks. I found a dead keelback the other day. My dog kills them both unfortunately, I would rather they just went on their way. Cobras hiss and try to avoid conflict, the keelbacks are usually in the bushes and i've never heard them make a noise. But my dog can smell and hear them and then hunts them, even though I tell her no...

Some time back I read that snakes kill 185,000 people a year on the Indian sub continent alone. (!0,000 by Cobras)

It certainly makes big news here, especially if it is a foreigner. I knew one Brit who was killed by a snake. He was so drunk he thought it a big joke and went around telling every one. But no-one believed him. He wandered off singing and was found dead later. But it was thought to be a Russels Viper. Cobras don't attack unless provoked. In India most of those killed were trying to catch them or disturbed thier nests.

This is correct. The regular cobra's venom is more toxic but the king injects a greater volume of less toxic venom. If the king can get all its venom into the wound, it will come to the same thing. It was probably a black cobra as they come close to villages to find food and are easier to find, whereas the king cobra only eats other snakes and lives deep in the jungle. Often cobras of all types don't inject a full load of venom and scuttle off after one bite which gives a healthy adult a better chance of survival. This guy was pissed and may have been bitten more than once, since the cobra couldn't get away into the bush.

At first I thought it was the cobra who was taking revenge which may also be true but if the deceased planned to use it as a murder weapon, it is hard to imagine a more fitting outcome. I knew a Thai man who died of a cobra bite in very suspicious circumstances that suggested foul play but the police didn't investigate.

BTW this is an old story that was the Bkk Post a week or two ago.

Love your post and you make me laugh so hard especially about the Gutter press. Well I am sorry about this man who died and my heart goes with his family and friends.

true.

But, I can't help but laugh at the topic. Maybe it's my black sense of humour, but he was a prime candidate for a Darwin award. Don't mess with nature and leave all wild creatures as they are... unless personally threated at the time.

Not wishing to speak ill of the deceased - a reasonable point. I will generalize - you need to be some kind of mental midget to either wish to or attempt to keep poisonous reptiles, especially snakes, in an apartment. How did he plan to feed the animal is only one of many not very carefully thought out questions. Still he did not deserve to die for his stupidity - we all do dumb things on occassion. B)
