Hangover stuntman receiving 'advanced care'

Australian action star Scott McLean, whose movie credits include The Matrix and Ghost Rider, was filming a daring road stunt in Thailand on 17 December (10) when a truck and a car collided. He was taken to a local medical centre to receive treatment for his injuries and later moved to a hospital in Bangkok, where he was reportedly placed in a medically-induced coma.

Bosses at the Warner Bros. film studio have now released a statement which reads, "There was an accident involving a truck and a car on the second unit set of The Hangover Part II near Bangkok, Thailand... A stuntman was injured during the filming of this sequence. The truck and car were both driven by stunt drivers. An ambulance immediately took the injured stuntman to the local hospital, and he has since been transported to a hospital in Bangkok where advanced care is being provided.

Stuntman Hurt in "Hangover II" Crash

NEW YORK (CBS) Australian stunt actor Scott McLean is in a coma after a car crash while filming a high-speed car scene for the sequel "The Hangover Part II." Warner Bros., which is distributing the movie, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the accident took place Dec. 19 in Thailand and that the actor is being treated at a hospital in Bangkok. "There was an accident involving a truck and a car on the second unit set of 'The Hangover Part II' near Bangkok, Thailand, at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 (Bangkok time). A stuntman was injured during the filming of this sequence," the statement from Warner Bros. read.

"The truck and car were both driven by stunt drivers. An ambulance immediately took the injured stuntman to the local hospital, and he has since been transported to a hospital in Bangkok, where advanced care is being provided. We are awaiting further details concerning his condition." No further details were available from the company, but a production source confirmed to THR that McLean was in an induced coma through sedation meant to help him recover from the incident.

The Todd Phillips movie, set for a May 2011 release, is a sequel to his summer 2009 blockbuster.

Ya.... everyone on set was pretty down about this, hope he pulls through. :(

Can you share any of the specifics of the accident? What were they trying to do? What went wrong?

Well... I DO know squat. The scene is when the Stu character (Ed Helms) is hanging out the window in a high speed car chase scene trying to drag a monkey back inside the car. There is a near miss with another vehicle when the stunt double is supposed to get his head back in the car at the last second.... there was a mistake and he got clipped in the head. We redid the scene a week later and were extra careful, no accident.

Don't you just love the way idiots like hearditallbefore like to put in their two cents worth without knowing jacksh*t. It wasn't the only accident this month shooting in Thailand either! There were two others. And yes you can guess, we are both film industry people. The other things we have been trying to get happening here is methodologies backed with assistance of the Thailand Film Office who do not know or care about safety on film sets. There have been loss of lives in the past 10 years through fatigue, stupidity and all easily avoided had Production Companies been able to override a producers or directors insistence. There is no back stop or endorsements for us to have final say to protect crew. If we shut shoots down, complaints get levelled to the Film Office and we risk our licenses. annoyed.gif T.I.T.

Ya its not very safe working in Thailand on sets, especially as a stuntman but even as an actor they expect you to do things that make you think "<deleted> are they crazy? Well this must be safe otherwise they wouldn't ask me to do it right? RIGHT?!" and it's totally not safe. But on the Hangover 2 it wasn't a case of a director rushing things or something like that, they were all very professional and safety conscious, but things do tend to go wrong more in Thailand than anywhere else. To a hollywood crew though its very shocking.

Accidents were happening every day on the Scorpion King shoot..... not a safe place to be at all.

Nothing untoward on the Impossible though! Knock on wood.

Thank you for the information.

The latest news seems to be that Mr. McLean remains in a medically-induced coma.

'Scorpion King 3' changed production services companies halfway through pre-production. One of the last remarks of the outgoing line producer was 'I hope no-one gets hurt'.

The budget cuts, lack of clear decision-making, cavalier attitude, and ruthlessness of the Producer had made it clear that this was not going to be a pleasant experience.

Seems like he is making a full recovery and "...wants to get back to work as soon as he can...".

A stuntman almost killed filming a car chase scene for The Hangover: Part Two has appeared on television for the first time - after making a startling recovery.

Scott McLean was doubling for actor Ed Helms when his head smashed into a truck, leaving him with a huge gash over the right side of his head and flesh torn from his skull.

Just seven months after the horrific accident, where witnesses were convinced he would die, the Australian actor has appeared on television to recount his fight back to health.

Incredible courage shown in recovering after so much personal trauma , and the devotion of his wife must surely contributed to his recovery. I dip my hat to both of you.

I feel really sorry for this man, nobody should have ever been put through similar risks just to earn a livelihood, that's just disrespecting human life and should be banned.

Why these movie's investors don't focus on something less risky? What about some real life/story based on a certain nation....maybe Thailand  and expose to the whole world what is really happening here? There is a huge aboundance of material and at the same time you will also be helping society to progress, i am sure that could prove to be a true hit, the real Thailand nobody has ever dared to expose.... i will buy a ticket if you do, i promise :D

History shows making a movie about the real Thailand will only get the end result banned

For example the Movie "P" told the truth about how Issan girls are pushed into the Thai sex scene

The film got top ratings and awards overseas but has never been allowed here in Thailand

Thanks for your reply, i had never heard before of this "P" movie, so i did a quick googled search and from the results i could read that the story was based on a lot of black magic and involved underaged actors in explicit content, ehhhrmm.....no sorry, that was a big pull off and not quite what i meant.

Hopefully one day we will have some sort of documentary/real life stories to make people wishing to relocate here or just come in holiday, aware of what is waiting for them and what to expect....perhaps in the loving memory of all the too many unwilling deceaseds.

Hangover - Part Three explains it then. While returning half cut from the massage parlour he really got hurt tripping over a loose paving stone when he tried to dodge the food cart blocking his way on Sukhumvit. The rest is the studio trying to save face Thai style.
