Can anybody offer advice, I am a 51 year old retiree and am considering travelling from the UK to Thailand (possibly to buy property) in january. My wife is Thai and we were married in the UK 6 years ago. Does this mean I can apply for a marriage visa, and if so can anyone advise how I apply or point me in the direction to obtain more info on this.

Believe what you want now is a multi entry class O non immigrant visa on the basis of your marriage. This allows you unlimited entries/exits of Thailand for a year and if you then decide to remain in Thailand it can be extended on a yearly basis with 200k (or 400k after next July) in a Thai bank account.

You should be able to obtain this visa at any Royal Thai Consulate in the UK if you show them your marriage papers and perhaps wife confirms you are still a good guy. :o

Dr Pat Pong should provide you consulate info if you give your location. Believe he recommends Hull often.

The replies to your post have focused on visa.

There are strong restrictions on buying land in your own name. Buying a house usually, in reality, means buying land, or you may be thinking of buying land for another purpose.

There are other alternatives, like buying land or land and house in a company name, but that's also got some complications, and involves annual expenses to keep the company alive.

If your not aware of this picture, then can I suggest you ask some specific questions in this regard.

There are several regular contributors to this forum who are quite expert about this subject.

Good luck

He has a Thai wife of six years standing so believed he probably knew the property laws and that his wife would be doing the buying. But always good to remind. Some of us fools still trust in marriage. :o
