Parking For Crossing To Lao

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am going to Lao tomorrow (Thursday) Originally my gf and I were going with her friends and I had no need to worry about parking but that has fallen through so we are now going on our own. Because of this we would seem to have 2 choices for crossing the border which will depend partly on hotel availability but we also need to park my rental car (I'm only here visiting at the moment). I really need to know if there is any safe parking available at either Ubon Ratchathani or Udon Thani / Nong Khai. I'm sure this has come up before in another thread I didn't want to leave this post later than I had to. I will now look to see what i can find or maybe someone knows a thread on this subject.

Do you want to park your car at the border (Chong Mek) or leave your car somewhere in Ubon?

Well we were thinking of Ubon as I didn't think there was any parking at Chong Mek. Either is fine I'm just concerned that the car is safe. I'm sure the insurance would cover it but I could do without the hassle.

Forgot to mention it's for 2 days.

Or you can go to Mukdahan, park on the bridge and take the bus across to Savannakhet

Oh okay, wasn't sure f it was just for a visa run or you were heading to Pakse for a day or two.

You can leave the car at Chong Mek but am not sure how safe it is so I would suggest leaving it in Ubon at the safe car park at Phadaeng Mansion (50 baht per night) and then take the international bus all the way through to Pakse. Costs 200 baht and is a nice comfy bus and saves you the hassle of getting from the border to Pakse.

Thanks MeMock sounds like good thinking. Did a search for Phadaeng Mansion and found your post on Teak Door so I now have a new forum to look at and what looks like a good reasonably priced hotel as well. When I did a search a few days ago to find a hotel forthe night before joining friends for the trip to Lao that never came up. Looks basic but clean, all you need sometimes.

I'm just puzzled by the parking thing. Do they offer just parking?

Yeah Phadaeng is just that, basic but very clean and friendly. You really cannot go wrong. Yes the owners will allow you to park your car there for last I heard 50 baht per day.In a great location as well being so close to the main park, wrong way and Peppers.

The international bus leaves from the main station on the ring road. 100 baht in a tuk tuk will see you right. I think it leaves at 10.30 every morning but please please please double check that!

Where are you staying tonight?

We are at home in Mahasarakham tonight. My gf phoned the hotel and we can park there but not on 15th as it will be busy but i got round this by stopping there that night so I can park anyway. Not sure about bus times but we will get there early to be sure.

Thanks for your help and I'll tell you what I think of the hotel.

All the best, have a safe trip. I am assuming you are staying in Pakse so would like to recommend a mid range hotel called known to the locals as 'the white house' (not sure of it's real name sorry.) Around the 400 baht mark and quite nice.

Thanks. Already booked into Champasak Palace. Not too bad a price. Always good to have another option if I come again though.

bus goes at 0930 & 1530. comes back 0830 & 1530 stops at border for about an hour. Goes to station behind market 200 yards off 13 road near the Pakse sports stadium. The 0930 out of Ubon can fill up with people coming off the overnight trains from BKK. U can book bus day before. Both directions. Supposed to be a website laobus.com ??? First 2 rows have limited leg space. Toilet on bus.

also express mini buses every hour 0600 to 1800 to border. Getting from border to Pakse available but could be a wait.

There is a patrolled undercover parking garage on the small one way street next to the Ubon hotel. Ubonkit road maybe??

Thanks My Friend I. I was going to post those details but you've saved me the time. As it turned out parking wasn't a problem as we were able to park at gf's friends office so didn't need hotel either as we came back on Saturday morning and drove back then. Will probably use the hotel sometime. Bus was ok apart from the air con runnin flat out all the time. Hard to believe the outside temp wasn't below zero what with everyone wrapped in coats, hoods, hats and scarves. Guy in front of me was feeling the cold and he was from Alaska.

Had problem getting out of Thailand as somehow my departure card had been romoved from the pocket on my bag where I keep all my documents. Thank goodness for a Thai gf. First 2 people we saw apparntly said nothing could be done but then a more senior guy made a phone call and filled one out. Not sure why the fuss as I was leaving not arriving but sorted in the end. A lot of confusion entering and leaving Lao. Again I was OK thanks to Thai gf but others were completely confused. They seem to likehaving you bent double to look at them through the window. Got to go now but may post more later.

many thanks.
