Buying A Used Truck, Is Toyota Really Worth The Extra $ ?

I've been on the market for a used truck (budget about 250k). Diesel, 4X4, double cab.

I've found some good Ford Rangers and Mitsu Grandis around 2002-2004 vintages. Am always taken aback to find that an equivalent Toyota Hilux is generally double the price, sometimes even more!

Assuming one ignores brand psychology, is the premium required to spend on the old Toyota trucks worth the extra bucks? Will it really pay itself off with reliability and lower maintenance charges? It seems hard to imagine that it will. If I go with a Toyota Hilux, I'm looking at getting something like a 1994-1995 for the same money as I would a 2003 Ford Ranger.

To me, it doesn't make sense to pay the premium, but I'm new to light trucks and what do I know?

Any advise appreciated!

For 250k your not going to get much. A little worn maybe, Toyota is another kettle of fish every one want's one, why I don't know it's maybe a name thing but TIT. That's why my last two car's have been Toyota's great resale. Go for the best other brand you can find. To my mind just as good, and better value.

Best of luck.

Toyota is the number 1 Vehicle New or Used in Thailand this is a fact.. Is it worth it, that is up to you. Example resell another vehicle of comparable value of a Toyota and see what you are offered...................:whistling:

Pickups are much of a muchness. The Toyotas are only good if you go for the higher range models; for the basic models you get better value with other brands. Also depends what you want it for; if you are anywhere in the countryside it will get covered in dust in a very short time. Thus in my opinion it makes sense to buy a 2nd hand pickup. Ford sounds good to me; old Mitsu's don't have much street cred here but are good pickups. Probably the worse technology wise is the old Isuzu's (I had a Rodeo 2.8 which was ok, and a 2.5 one; which is a very old engine design). Mind you Isuzu's are cheap to run and hardy if you don't mind the old design.

Personally I think Honda make better cars than Toyota (and Toyota had quality issues some years back not to mention that big recall about brakes last year).
