Police Arrest French Child Molester in Nan Province

The police have arrested a French language instructor who allegedly sexually abused a young boy in Nan province. Police said the man sold photographs of the children on the internet.

Nan Provincial Police have arrested a 48 year-old Yves Marie Lepetit, a French national language instructor who allegedly sexually abused a number of young boys in Nan province.

The authorities initially charged Lepetit with statutory rape of children aged 15 and under. The Frenchman was taken to his house to reenact the crime for the police investigation.

Lepetit was arrested after the local police force were informed by the Immigration and Special Branch Police Forces that a number of video clips, showing a young boy from Nan province being molested, are being sold on a website.

Police then disguised as a potential buyer and contacted Lepetit to lure him into being arrested.

According to the investigation, Lepetit has been living in Nan province for the past four years as a language instructor working at various schools.

The police have also found a number of pornographic video CDs at Lepetit's house.

According to the 11 year old victim in the video clips, he has been to Lepetit's home seven or eight times since mid-2010.

Each time, the Frenchman would sexually abuse the boy and videotape the incident.

Afterwards, the boy would be given 100 baht and allowed to play a computer game.

Police have launched an investigation on Lepetit, who is also suspected of being a part of a child prostitution ring in Thailand.

However his associates may already have left the country.

The authorities have issued a warning to other parents to use extra precaution when hiring a foreign instructor or tutor for their children.

A worse image is the various online Thai news sources that have published still photos captured from Lepetit's CDs to publically show, without pixelating, him molesting small boys. :annoyed:

The police have also found a number of pornographic video CDs at Lepetit's house.

According to the 11 year old victim in the video clips

I want to remind parents that their children are at risk of being deceived. Parents should monitor and supervise their children closely. Also tutoring schools and institutions should check the history of foreign teachers.

What is the point of using the word "alleged' if the headline has already declared a conviction. I really thought the article was going to be about a French Man on the run after a conviction being caught. Sounds like there is not much doubt about this guy given the information provided but still you either have to choose if somebody is guilty until proven innocent or not. You cannot have it both ways ... or maybe in Thailand you can.

No doubt this is true but why in the world are they pretending it is only foreign pedophiles when all this does is present the false image that Thais don't have to do their due diligence in dealing with Thais who also have care over their children or are the only talking about when they publicly display the child victims.

I guess tomorrow will be a snow in Thailand 2 meters high, as i agreed about something, with you. But, it is democracy, the real one. When rivals in opinions(as we are) can find same point of view.

But, for sake of truth, i have to comment your words.

You said:

"I want to remind parents that their children are at risk of being deceived."

I agree and i would say not only to being deceived. Much worse things ARE going on(later about why)as the MURDERER from USA(jailed for 10 years as he killed a child, girl) were welcomed and accepted to be a teacher(!)in Thailand.

"Parents should monitor and supervise their children closely."

I say that will never happens, in majority of cases and the reasons why, are for special debate, not this time.

"Also tutoring schools and institutions should check the history of foreign teachers."

Not the right address. In fact, is very wrong to expect from schools to make it.(They already have too much of"independence" in deciding process so they are making mistakes, often). That your idea(really good one) should to be addressed to the establishment, Police at the airports, Immigration Police Offices, Labour Offices and more than sure, to Ministry of Education. Schools have no ways to ask Interpol and to check the background of any applicant for teaching position.

Until THE GOVERNMENT with their departments don't take care about checking, will be cases like this. Many more unknown. So, in my opinion, the only one we should blame for no checking by Interpol, is GOVERNMENT. Same way, that can shows carelessness of establishment for youth in Thailand but i will not claim that now, as i know you would not like it.

That is what i disliked at Taksin(or Thaksin) and why i had a hope Democrats will change it, so that way(by checking)they will make a differences in between good and decent farangs and the rest. As nothing happened about it, as we can see all is the same, that is(among many other things)why i don't like Democrats. Or, in other words, i don't believe in their understanding of democracy and that they are interested to make ANY real change-toward previous Govt.

I hope you and i understand each other better a bit, now.

I wonder if the boys mother knew. an 11 year old with half a days wages in his pocket regular !!!!!! Also monitor foreigners and not Thai......amazing.

Can't believe that it happened again, I've heard it from my wife. I haven't got the right words now. :jap:

I agree with you, partly.

But for true sake, we should be fair and to say this is not quite true, and it would be fair to say recently 3-4 teachers or professors were caught in sexual abuse of their students(usualy for higher marks in exchange).

I know for around 4-5 cases of arresting Thais for such thing.

But, same time, i should say that there were not so"juicy" stories abot it, not so much of details as now or any time when some freaky farang do it.

However, should to be stricter control of people who are applying for teaching positions. I agree with the statement of that Policeman but i am annoyed with his"suggestion" to schools to do those checking. It is HIS job to do. No doubt!

I don't see connection between those 2 things you said but i know what do you say between the lines.

I disagree with you.

Of course, we are worried about visa regime and regulations, work permits. We are woried about complicated, frustrating and expensive procedure. Good people from the West, DECENT farangs are here also. Don't forget that, please.

You can not generalize things. Not in this way.

It is job of the government, establishment to make a difference between good and bad people who are coming here, living and working.

Thai society have all rights of this world to protect themselves from bad influences, bad people. Are they doing it? No they don't.

Same Policeman, who stated this, should to be the one who must to protect society from bad foreigners, by doing cheking by request to Interpol.

As he is the one who should care of it, his statement and advice to SCHOOLS to do it doesn't hold the water. Opposite, that can shows how much the things are upside - down and no one care.

I was telling you what I knew, and wasn't meaning to be biased, what you say is true, and agree about the police work, HIS job. My Thai friend tells me of many cases of abuse by Thai teachers, to young girls and boys, and went on to say its sort of done.... here. its every day in every province, so I said "widespread" he said yes

The problem I see here is the potential manifestation of the knee-jerk reaction. I sincerely hope Thailand doesn't follow in the footsteps of the UK, with it's socially divisive CRB checks.

Yes, of course we must protect our children as best we can, but the sad fact is that there have always been these types around, and there always will be. Community and communication is the best defence against them.

In real terms, these situations are rare occurences. It's only because the media thinks that such stories sell newspapers that they are given such prominence. Especially if the perp is farang.

The reality is that the vast majority of foreign language (and indeed, all other) teachers in Thailand, and around the world, are just regular guys who have not the slightest inclination to abuse the kids in their charge - quite the opposite, in fact. The bad apples are few and far between.

If the bond of trust between teacher and pupil is broken by media hype, then everyone will be the loser.

As an aside, I am not, nor have I ever been, a teacher. But I do have four children (all adults now) so I feel qualified to comment on this subject.

Was this guy a teacher in the local school? Or was he just some falang that was living by himself in the village and volunteered to tutor students. I single guy living in a village without his thai girl friend is kinda strange, even more so if he isn't a teacher at the local school. Just moves in and sets up house all by himself and then volunteers to tutor the local kids. RED FLAGS, RED FLAGS. Didn't anyone see them or didn't anyone care?

I dunno. CRB checks wouldn't be too difficult as a lot of countries have this now. Probably not a bad idea, one preventative measure at least.

I do think we hear less about Thais caught but I think that has more to do with our news sources as well as it not being as sensational when it is a farang. The one comment I made in my post is that I don't see them parading the child victims out in front of the cameras with the accused when I do see a Thai pedo story. Again it may just be a combination of the news I am exposed to here as well as it being less sensational. Lets not pretend this doesn't happen in almost every country ... I think if an Illegal Mexican jaywalks in Arizona now it is national news in the US.

But I also observed that the police person in the previous articles was going out of his way to warn parents against farang pedophiles without mentioning anything about pedos coming in all nationalities and walks of life. This is a disservice to the people he is speaking to and trying to help. However, I did consider after my post that if you take the number of Thais compared to the number of farangs in Thailand I would have to assume that the percentage of farang child molesters is higher than that of Thais. Still I think the police spokesperson was either out of line or his words were out of context.

Difficult Nisa, I couldn't put a finger on either one being the bigger offender-because of the type of coverage they attract. Quite right about the parading. All countrys have this problemwith molesters- I even read it was a problem in Afghanistan-I was shocked with that. The police spokesperson to my thinking was out of order. I do wish all these shocking sort of acts could be snuffed out. But I suppose they have been around since time begun. I can only conclude that big punishments dont clear it up. To my mind we have to protect more. weather it be this or suiside bombers, Thinking about it-weve gone out to get them-near a failure-so we must build a fort kind of thing and screen all. to protect your country--or our kids.
