Modernform Is Having Annual Sale:final Day

Recommended Posts

This is no association with them, but for those who desire better quality furniture, modernform has an annual sale ending today. Some nice sofas are going off at 30% or more and it is a grab. The gallery building is along Srinakarin Road, near to Rama 4. It spanned 6 floors of furniture.

I bought a TV console 1.5 meter with slide doors and pull out cabinets, for less than 4500 baht (order delivery in Oct!).

There are some items from 50 to 70%, which I really really wanted to buy, and if you are looking for study desks, they have the upmarkets and SOHO brand going for sensible prices.

There are no SALES in Bangkok. When they do, they rise prices 50% and advertise discounts up to 40%

Actually it's a scheme to increase revenues, work all the time. They used to do that in Europe, now heavily regulated. You can't advertise sales if they aren't real sales.

Butterfly

Actually there are plenty of sales.

I can assure you that:

- Prada

- Christian Dior

- Burberry

- many others

do discount from the prices they were selling earlier in the season to a discounted price. Modern Form do something similar....

I do agree though that people like Index, Central and Emporium seem to be on permanent "sale" and this would breach the fair trading acts of many countries - theoretically it also breaches some sort of consumer fair trade aspects here, but I am a little foggy as to what. General guideline where I grew up and studied consumer law was the price had to have averaged the quoted full price level for the preceeding 180 days...

same applies for interest free and other representations of pricing.....

Modernform supplied a kitchen to a german friend of mine infested with termites, they munched their way through it in no time and it disentgrated before his very eyes. He is not happy. He has replaced it with cheap aluminium units which he advises are not such a tasty prospect for unwanted visitors :o

Index in KK have a sale on everyday, same same but not different

The only way to know if something is a sale is to do your own research--compare the price with a bunch of other places offering comparable products. High end furniture is usually imported from Europe and thus terribly marked up looking at it from a farang reference point. Just my experience.

i went to that sale last week. not impressed with either the styles or the prices of the furniture.

they did have some beautiful kitchens though.

for furniture ,(beds, sofas, desks, armchairs etc.) try central department store at chidlom , not as big a choice as modernform , but stylish locally made furniture at reasonable prices. they will custom build furniture for you as well.

In Bangkok while buying a furniture please note the following, probably it may help you since i lived here for 6 years.

1. Think is it essential and most important for your daily life, becuase we pay a huge amount of rent for space and dont waste that space just for your unused furniture, so your rent will be worth. You can always leave your space blank it is worth.

2. Most of the Sale furniture items are not really comfortable for sitting or use. For example i bought two chair and a round shaped dining table some year ago, and after used the table is tipping off if i dont place something in the middle. The chairs are really not comfortable and i cannot sit for long time. So basically it is cheap and a waste.

3. If you have a rented house you really dont need furnitures becuase they already provide. For example in my living room i had a big sofa which occupied big space, i really dont need that big sofa, so i informed the owner to remove that and i bought a smaller sofa and now i have more space to walk around :D .

4. There are many thing owners dump in your appartment they dont need it :D . In my balcony i had a big plastic char used for sun bath. I really dont need that because my skin will be burnt :o if i sit in the sun becuase i am an asian.

5. Also the fridge and matterss they gave me was very old :D and i asked them to remove and i bought new ones to use. These are the items nicer to use new ones of your own.

Before buying anything better think it is very useful and essential they buy, also check the size and space occupied in your place. Always worth if you leave a space in your room, you will really enjoy it . :D

Note : Did anyone seen the Modenform advertisement in Bangkok post, they said "Falling price Sep 9-11" and in the background they have shown NewYork without twin towers ? Also they have added minuature furnitures falling from sky. What it means ? Are they celebrating Sep 11 ? I found it is a cheap advertisement technique. I hate some companies used Tsunami also some back.

I did some research, I guess imported furniture are subjected to insane tax rate, 30%?

Just because an item has a 30% tax does not mean it will only be marked up 30%. In my experience, you are often charged 100% or more compared to retail in other countries--especially at the high end. I onced looked at some not so impressive kitchen cabinets, but since they were from Italy ran a flat 1 million baht per meter. I had also looked at subzero refrigerators and they ran over double the price I was used to and they had none in stock. I asked why I should buy from them rather than importing two of them and paying the duties myself. They said "because we offer you warranty service" :o Buying any high end stuff in Thailand is just a nightmare unless it makes you feel good paying more.
