If you are sick to death of the evil empire (microsoft) try knoppix.

knoppix is linux (debian) on a bootable cd (doesn't change your harddisk at all).

you can buy it at www.cheeplinux.com (5 quid).

it really f'g rocks.

I am serious - I used to play with muLinux but that's well out of date now.

Knoppix is serious computing but user friendly.

for a fiver you can get what m$ charge £100 or more.

Enjoy.

(actually it's free - opensource - the fiver is just distribution costs.)

p.s. i don't work for cheeplinux and i am sure you can get it elsewhere - just google "knoppix"!

hi'

knoppix is The well known "live-cd" for Linux, you can work with it booting from cd everytime saving your config on a usb key or a floppy, if you still have a fat32 partition, you can write on it :D and the best of all :D you can install it on hdd!

everyone who would like to get a taste of linux should boot once from this distro :o

If I ever offer you any help in this forum, it will be because I didn't read who was asking. I'm pretty sure that I know more about computers than you ever will. I doubt you have ever had the job title "Information Technology Manager", nor completed a Master's degree in Information Systems, nor written a computer program for Windows using Microsoft Foundation Classes, nor managed a network in a production environment. Generalizations suck, and sexist generalizations are worse. If you weren't so closed-minded you might meet some female geeks...

I don't think he's looking for female geeks, cathyy. :D

Just have a look at his book which he so desperately promotes in his signature:

""Desperately Seeking Sex & Sobriety" google "paul pisces" for more" :D

Desperately Seeking Sex and Sobriety

by Paul Pisces

...

Synopsis:

Colchester Essex England - Local boy makes bad!Ex Colchester Royal Grammar School pupil Paul Pisces' life slowly descends into a web of computers, alcohol, alcoholism and depression. The brothels of Amsterdam, however, provide some sexual excitement. Eventually following redundancy he takes up sex tourism in the Far East to relieve the boredom.A brief respite is encountered when he finds a job in San Francisco during the internet boom and bust fiasco but ultimately he returns to his alcoholic ways and books a flight back to Bangkok. From here it is just a short coach ride to Pattaya and a short step to suicide with a shotgun.

:D

That's the beauty of the internet, and such a forum. You can talk with all kinds of people. :o

And they all love Linux!

And then, yes, Knoppix is great stuff, indeed! :D

Yeah, I've spent enough time in Thailand to notice that I'm invisible -as in not a sexual prospect- to most Western men. :o

I dunno, I was less fond of Knoppix. I checked it out a couple releases ago, and just couldn't abide the differences between it and a real Debian distro. And mounting a hard drive with read/write permissions is far more difficult in Knoppix than it needs to be. Still, it makes a reliable disaster recovery tool.

How's 802.11g support in Linux coming along? Is it still primarily done with ndiswrapper? It's about the only solution, since Broadcom won't release any info about their chips. :/

Hi Cathyy,

First of all my apologies for my un-PC comments.

A not very funny attempt at humour.

I would have replied earlier but I was banned for being un-PC on a different post.

I love censorship.

But the real strength of Knoppix isn't whether it supports this or that wireless protocol.

It's that you and I and even my mum and dad can just stuff it in the cd-rom drive and use it.

It can (possibly) bring free s/w to the masses.

I can dream.

-Kind regards, PP
