I have an S, but the wife has a 5 (bought in the UK, so I had to root it to add Thai fonts as it's still on Android 2.1.)

Apparently 2.2 will be released for it shortly, and as 2.2 switched to Unicode, Thai should be supported without rooting from that point, regardless of where you bought the phone.
