I have Windows7 and the new Word in Office. I cannot get the font and margin settings that I like to be remembered for new documents. I clicked on 'default' and assured Mr PC that i want these new settings for new documents, but it never happens.

I don't understand your statement about 'default'. However, you must be sure that you save a New Document template or Blank Document template (I am using Office 2007, so I don't know which yours says) with the settings you want. You need the template used for new documents to have the settings you want. You can try Opening whichever template is used for new documents, make the changes to the font and whatever else, then save the template with the exact same name.
