Thailand approves 90-day visa-free stays for Japanese tourists

BANGKOK - (Kyodo) Thailand's Cabinet approved Tuesday extending the time Japanese can stay in Thailand without getting a special visa.

Vachara Kannikar, the deputy government spokesman, said that beginning May 1 through Oct. 31 Japanese tourists will be able to stay in the country for 90 days visa-free.

Previously, Japanese could enter only for 30 days without a visa. He said the extension is part of Thailand's assistance to "comfort Japanese" after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and during the ongoing nuclear crisis.
