I have the Emoji keyboard enabled, it's great fun. Seems to work fine iPhone - iPhone.

I can also send Emoji to a Samsung phone and they show up fine, but when that person replies, I get nothing but empty messages.

Is there a fix for that, or is that just incompatible?

They may need a plug-in for their messaging app.

What model, Android version? SMS app?

If they forward, not reply, your message back to you is it still blank?
