We have been to Ayutthaya a number of times, we live in Bangkok, but do little more than drive round the sites and I'm sure we are missing a lot.

We have friends visiting from the UK next month and have indicated they might like to go there, we don't want do a tour from Bangkok but I wondered if there are any good local guides we could book there?

Unfortunately I cannot help and unfortunately I can identify with your problem. In the 90'ties I used to go a lot to Ayutthaya in my work, my employer had (I guess still has) a factory in Roijana Industrial Park and we were a group of people who met regularly at the factory for production planning purposes.

We stayed in Krungsri River Hotel and later in U Tong Hotel - hence my interest for another thread on this board - "The U Hotel In Kanchanaburi".

Anyway, we visited the ruins without anyone to commment upon what we saw and my american colleagues used to refer to the ruins as "a pile of rocks". For the benefit of doubt I choose to interpret it as no disrespect meant to the ruins per se, more an expression of our ignorance.

If you have any luck with finding a guide I shall appreciate if you post your experiences here,

I know you said that you didn't want to do a trip from BKK but there is quite a good one. You are taken by coach morning to Ayutthaya escorted around the ruin's with a very knowledgable guide followed by a trip back down the river on a large boat to include a very good buffet lunch. Can be done the other way round but that way you tend to eat to early. By doing that you get to see the stone's + all the bit's along the river King's boat's ect. Just a thought.

Yes thanks fredob43, we have our own car and intended to take our friends there on the way back from an overnighter slightly up country, was hoping to hook up with a local guide. I don't suppose guides are hanging about on the off chance.

There are several ticket info desk's there, and book's with map's in can be obtained that tell you all about the place. Just take's a little bit of reading as you go around. There are also big display's that tell you all the gen at each pile of stone's. Just a though they might even know about a local guide. A few km up the road there's the king's summer palace (He doesen't use anymore) well worth a look. Just come to mind last time I was there they seemed to have load's of Thai peep's taking tourist's around just tag along with one of the English speaking one's. Ask them first I'm sure that for a few Bt tip they will not mind. Have a nice trip.

In fact I found Ayutthaya's a sleepy town. It's just a by pass. I stay in the so call "Biggest" hotel in town, the Krungsri river Hotel...... expensive ! But the turn down is that the hotel have very big car park, at least 6 Security guards working overnight.... and my vehicle parked just in front the lobby door vision.............

My car logo was peeled off and stolen! What a shame, no one in the hotel can give me a proper explanation!
