Yesterday in The Mall Bangkapi I saw that the HTC Flyer tablet was officially on sale. I couldn't resist and bought one. The price is THB 16,900 and the Magic Pen is included.

It runs Android 2.3, Gingerbread, which is not really for tablets, but it works fine. AIS offers a data package with 3 GB / month for THB 399, which I bought too. The tablet also has WiFi and 32 GB of memory.

My missus challenged me that I won't be able to install WhatsApp, because she could not do so on her iPad2. I took the challenge and told her, Steve Jobs has no saying in the Android world. But, oops, there was no WhatsApp to be found in the "Market". So I checked their website and found it and downloaded it. It works fine on the Flyer and the Missus owns me one, hehe.

The Magic Pen is kind of fun, it allows me to highlight text, add remarks or silly drawings and save it.

Next week, my SIL will bring me a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet. Curious to see the difference.

Can you make phone calls with it

Simple answer: No.

More detailed: I don't know if there are or will be VoIP Apps for this tablet. My wife uses Viber on her iPad2, but this app is not (yet) available on Android.

If someone knows such an app, that actually works, I would be much obliged.

Skype is available in the Android Market...if both users have it installed on their device and are connected to WiFi (or EDGE for chat) FREE calls can be made within Thailand or worldwide :)

There are: Skype, Fring and Tango, to name the most popular, and a bunch of less popular apps for VoIP.

Fring and Tango support Video calls as well ... Skype, well Skype USED to be good ....

Cheers,
