Another Baby Panda Expected in 10 Days

Chiang Mai Zoo expects another panda cub after the famous panda mama has been found to be experiencing hormonal fluctuations and an expansion of her uterus, which are signs of pregnancy for pandas.

The Chiang Mai Zoo is reporting that celebrity panda Lhinping's mother, Lin Hui, is likely to give birth for a second time soon.

An ultrasound scan was conducted by a veterinarian from Chulalongkorn University, which showed an expansion of her uterus. This means she will probably give birth in about 10 days.

The good news comes after Lin Hui was finally artificially inseminated successfully on April 25.

The veterinarian, Kannikar Nimtrakul revealed that the expansion of the uterus is the first sign of a panda's pregnancy. However, the team did not find the embryo yet.

Meanwhile, the zoologist is closely monitoring Lin Hui's behavior.

Another ultrasound scan will be conducted again by the end of this week.

Lin Hui has also been lactating and has been seen tearing off strips of bamboo to build a home for her offspring, which mother pandas naturally do.

Hey, the Democrats can put it forward as their Prime Minister candidate in the next election, it will be a landslide! ;-)

With Chinese parentage and being born in Chiang Mai it would be very red and not exactly democrat material. :jap:

Famous panda Lin Hui may not be pregnant

CHIANG MAI, 13 July 2011 (NNT)-The veterinarian, Kannikar Nimtrakul reportedly could not indicate whether the famous panda, Lin Hui, was pregnant due to her fluctuating hormonal levels. She added the pregnancy was possible given that Lin Hui’s uterus began to expand.

Mr. Prasertsak Boontrakul-poonthawee, Head of Chiang Mai Zoo's panda section, also revealed that following the 4th ultrasound test on the female panda, the embryo could not be found yet. Her hormonal levels had fluctuated so much that the veterinarian was unsure whether she was pregnant.

According to Mr. Prasert, Lin Hui has been showing signs of nervousness and would remain only in her captivity for observations. Chinese scientists have reportedly told that each panda has different characteristics. Their hormonal levels could not be determined. The Thai team was informed to observe the panda closely and continue to conduct an ultrasound scan twice a week until the hormonal levels return to normal.
