Would-be PM Not to Double as Defense Minister

Pheu Thai top PM-elect Yingluck Shinawatra insists she will not take both the posts of prime minister and defense minister.

She also says her first Cabinet line-up will be released within seven days once the Election Commission certifies the poll results.

Yingluck Shinawatra, the Pheu Thai Party's Number One party-list MP-elect insisted she will not double as prime minister and defense minister.

Whether other Cabinet members will hold multiple offices, Yingluck said it will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

At any rate, she expected the poll results to be certified by the Election Commission in a week.

She made it clear that the new Cabinet will only be revealed once the poll results are endorsed by the EC.

Rebutting reports that coalition party leaders have met with her brother former PM Thaksin Shinwatra to negotiate for Cabinet seats, Yingluck said the new government will be formed in Thailand and not by someone outside the country.

She also said individuals will be appointed to Cabinet seats for their skills and public image.

Yingluck vowed the Pheu Thai Party will do its best in running the country.

She also revealed that a number of outsiders with needed expertise could be appointed as heads of some ministries.

Yingluck also commented on the possibility that she could be disqualified after she showed off her cooking skills, stir-frying noodles in front of voters during her election campaign.

She said that she was not concerned because it was part of campaign activities and the noodle was not distributed to anyone.

Yingluck added the matter is up to the EC to decide.

The Pheu Thai prime ministerial candidate also indicated that various state agencies and representatives of the private sector have been consulted on the policies of the new government.

One of the most talked about policies is the plan by the Pheu Thai Party to raise the minimum wage to 300 baht per day.

Yingluck admitted the wage hike will unlikely be introduced right away after small and medium businesses have asked for more time to prepare for the hike.

Yingluck reiterated her intention to deliver the promises made by Pheu Thai during the election campaigns.

She responded to questions about the ability of the new government to fund all the polulist policies by saying she will need to consult the Finance Ministry.

The other newspaper gives a reason for this: 'never thought of also holding the defence or any other portfolio because she already had the responsibility to coordinate implementation of the party's policies.' No further comment necessary?

Good to read that Ms. Yingluck is still fairly consistent, still a few 'will be considered', 'need to consult'. What sounded good during the election needs a bit of backbone now that people think promises will be implemented really soon now, one of these days, like next year, or at least before the end of 4-year term

Yingluck denies taking top post at defence ministry

BANGKOK, July 12 - Thailand's prime minister-to-be Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday dismissed reports that she will be defence minister herself but conceded the cabinet line-up has yet to be completed.

Ms Yingluck, set to be the country's first female prime minister, said the rumour is groundless as she will have a huge task waiting for her to do as prime minister.

The top Pheu Thai party list candidate said she has not yet completed her cabinet line-up and that every decision about the cabinet is made in Thailand, not by her brother, in self-imposed exile, brother Thaksin Shinawatra.

"Now I'm still looking for appropriate persons and have not yet made the cabinet list. I must wait for the official endorsement on the election results from the Election Commission (EC), according to Ms Yingluck.

Amid high expectation of her new cabinet make-up, Ms Yingluck said she would try her best to get well-qualified ministers who will help implement her government's policies and solve the problems facing the Thai people.

The incoming premier added her cabinet line-up will be explicit in one week after she is royally appointed as the new prime minister.

The EC commissioners on Tuesday convened to discuss about the endorsement of MPs and the polling complaints.

Some Red Shirt supporters turned up at the EC headquarters in Bangkok to follow up whether the poll agency will consider the case of their detained leader Jatuporn Prompan, Pheu Thai No8 party-list candidate.

The EC secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn disclosed in the afternoon that the poll agency has not yet considered the endorsement of elected MPs in the morning as there are many complaints to consider.

Mr Suthiphon however said the EC Tuesday meeting has discussed and voted on the complaint filed against Ms Yingluck who cooked fried noodle and distributed to crowd during her election campaign in Nakhon Ratchasima. Her action allegedly violated election law. The EC’s decision on the matter will be announced later.

Meanwhile, outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday that his cabinet has agreed in principle on a royal decree on opening ordinary session of parliament and the new government is expected to take office in August.

Mr Abhisit made the statement after chairing his last cabinet meeting at Government House and thanked concerned officials for supporting and facilitating the work of the Democrat-led coalition government.

The premier said it depends on the consideration of His Majesty the King on which date the parliamentary session will open and the matter will be forwarded for royal endorsement only after the poll agency officially endorses 95 per cent of the elect MPs or 475 out of 500 persons.

"I understand that today (July 12) the EC can still not endorse all elected candidates but I believe it will be able to do so within a 30-day timeframe," stated Mr Abhisit. "We should have the new government in August and I want to see (the new government) as soon as possible." (MCOT online news)

Sounds like the job description/standard are/will be lowered to more aptly fit those jockeying for position.

The jury is still out on the lady being able to handle any government responsibility much less taking two responsible portfolios.

Gim'me a break! Is this really disqualifying her for her new role as PM??? What games are those people playing? Disqualifying the majority of Thai voters at the same time. All that will happen with such stupid actions is causing other riots...

Should'nt the loosers give it a break and let her show how she can do this job? Then... no later than 4 years from now, a new vote will take place and then her followers might change their mind about her qualification...

Yingluck not to take charge of any ministry

Pheu Thai Party's prime minister-to-be Yingluck Shinawatra yesterday dismissed speculation that she would keep the Defence portfolio, or any other Cabinet post, for herself, saying running a ministry was a full-time job.

"I don't want to hold concurrent positions since I will have a heavy workload as prime minister," she said.

However, other members of the Cabinet, which she vowed would be unveiled within one week following the royal command appointing her as prime minister, could take more than one seat, she said.

She again denied any involvement of her big brother Thaksin in the Cabinet's line-up, which would be finalised after the drafting of her government's policy statement to Parliament.

"I expect the composition of my Cabinet to become clearer a week after I become the prime minister," she said.

Navy chief Admiral Kamthorn Phumhiran said he was unaware that he might be one of the candidates for defence minister.

He said he and Supreme Commander General Songkitti Jaggabatara recently visited Brunei to observe a naval exercise, but there was no meeting with Thaksin during the trip.

He said he wants to lead a peaceful and restful life after his mandatory retirement in September.

Outgoing Premier Abhisit Vejjajiva said he did not want to comment on the likely Yingluck Cabinet.

"By precedent, a prime minister can work in dual positions but I didn't," he said.

She should carefully consider the requirements of her office before thinking about taking on additional responsibilities, he added.
