Hello,

Last year I was in Thailand for one month and I had one hour Thai massage almost every day. It did hurt sometimes but I always felt full of energy afterward. A friend told me that having massage every day may not be good because the limbic system may be too stimulated. What do you think of that? Is it safe and healthy to have Thai massage every day? It felt very good to me.

Thanks

I'll be curious to see some educated replies to this, as well.

I've heard that one should have no more that two or three Thai massages per week, but never knew exactly why.

I believe the standard recommendation is not more than every other day. I assume this is in part to avoid excessive soreness/bruising and to give your body time to flush out the lactic acid etc that a good massage releases into the bloodstream.. (I would not worry about the limbic system!)

What I have done at resorts etc on holiday is to alternate body massage and foot massage each day, worked fine for me.

The every other day idea pertains to serious deep massage. If it is more of a gentle mild relaxation massage then daily should be fine.

I have been stimulated by Thai massage and turned out happy at the end.

Seriously, need to find out from the person how long they have been doing massage for. Sure the young cute girl may look good, but may have little experience or able to use their power correctly when giving massage. Some of the more expensive spa's may have good therapists, but some times it is just trial and error.

Then there is the foot massage. This done well can give good relief to the body. For some of this work, you may need to go several times to enjoy positive benefit.

What about Thai herbal massage?

With massage I have made it an integral part of my health regime for last 20 years. Add acupuncture and cupping to this and I believe brings a lot of benefit. :D

The skilled massage therapists I know, recommends only massage every second day. Furthermore every second time, shall be foot massage (reflexology). A skilled therapist may find exactly where to press and which stretch exercise to perform - almost like a healer. The acupressure points and the stretch exercises origins from eremit munks and was found described on the walls at the Wat Po temple in Bangkok, now famous as massage school. It may some times hurt at the beginning of a cure - because something is not in the right shape - and you may need several sessions. However, many of the massage ladies may not have enough education and/or experience to heal you, but you can still enjoy a good relaxation. It may take some time to find the right places and therapists.

I have massage two or three times a week and change between full body Thai-oil-massage and foot massage. I have lived here a couple of years and found some good therapist to choose from. I belive in the Thai massage as preventive health cure.
