MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican drug lord Oscar Oswaldo Garcia Montoya, who was captured by police on Thursday, has admitted to having been directly involved in around 600 murders, officials said on Friday.

Garcia Montoya, 36, who is also known as "El Compayito", has confessed after his arrest that he had been personally involved in some 300 murders and ordered another 300 against rival drug trafficking organizations during his 14 years in criminal organizations, according to the Attorney General's Office in the State of Mexico.

Garcia Montoya, the leader of the organized crime group 'La Mano con Ojos' (the hand with eyes), was captured by Mexican intelligence agency G60 and local police on Thursday morning in the Tlalpan area of Mexico ciy. He was in the possession of a 9 millimeter weapon at the time of his arrest.

The criminal, who in the past formed part of the Mexican Marines, began working for the Beltran Leyva drug cartel in 2002 as an assassin and later became the personal bodyguard of Arturo Beltran Leyva "el Barbas," who was killed during a Navy operation in 2008. He also worked for Edgar Valdés Villareal, also known as "la Barbie."

Garcia Montoya also allegedly participated in the killings of 24 people who were later found dead in La Marquesa in September 2009. But he later formed his own criminal group which has become known for its violent tactics and beheading their victims.

In addition, Garcia Montoya admitted that, prior to his capture, he had ordered the beheading of six members of his group who wanted to leave. According to his statements, their executions would be recorded on video and later released to mass media.
