Rescued Elephant Calf Back to Phu Luang

Local villagers have rescued an elephant calf and are trying to return him to his mother in Phu Luang forest.

A seven-month-old male elephant calf, who stands 1.10 meter tall and weighs 100 kilograms, has been rescued and brought by locals to Phu Luang wildlife sanctuary.

Head of the Elephant Rehabilitation Project in Loei Province, Watchara Thammasorn, examined the calf and found a wound in his mouth.

Village chief Somporn Kwanchom heard the seven-month-old calf crying out for his mother and food all night long and went out to feed him a liter of milk every two hours.

The village chief walked about one kilometer deep into the forest to return the calf to his mother.

After six hours of searching, the elephant's mother could not been found.

The village chief also mixed elephant waste with water and spread it on his body in order to attract the baby elephant's mother.

According to the chief, the calf was separated from his mother while his mother and their herd made their way into the village to forage for food.

Then, over the past 2-3 days, there have been heavy rain and water has been overflowing from the river.
