Why Are Sometimes Windscreen Wiper Up On Cars ?

Featured Replies

Windshield wipers UP...It's a signal to other drivers that they are horny!

Wipers erect = I'm horny.

Wipers down = "No thanks", I'm satisfied.

And if you leave one up and one down?..... - "I've just gone to get some Viagra"

You've got 2 :shock1: ?

Another one... Why is it all drivers reverse into parking spaces, however, meet someone on narrow soi and most drivers won't reverse to a clear spot just behind them? (more of a rhetorical question as I suspect we all know the answer to that one!).

Wipers up / wipers down, OK there are perhaps a few reasons. We have at least concluded that drivers in Thailand know the wipers exist. Why then do taxi's refuse to use these wipers in all but the most torrential downpours ?

He's got 2 and one requires Viagra.

the wiper thing is similar to the pickups and cars at rest stops/gas stations along the highway, they raise the hood to cool the engine.

Both serve no real purpose but satisfy the owner that they are taking good care of their vehicle

I was being driven up to Lamphun by a Thai driver that did that at the top of the big hill! Later his fuel pump appeared to malfunction and we had to pull off the road for a while. His solution was to disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour. Whatever the illogic of it, it worked!

Probably he just wanted to relax a while with a beer. Nothing wrong with that. :D

More important question-why do off duty cops wear only plain white t-shirts when they go out?

So they don't clash with their Hello Kitty under wear?whistling.gif

They wear the white t-shirts to let gullible farang know they are off duty.

The farang is now happy in the knowledge that he wont be scammed as the cop is off duty.

@richard_smith237:

1. Was told by a mechanic in Thailand that if you don't turn off the A/C on a diesel engine, before turning off the car, the starter motor will wear out quicker. (Was told this after replacing said starter motor, pronounced "die star" in Thai.) Also, it may have something to do with the battery wearing out sooner, as we all know in this climate, batteries go quicker than in cooler climates.

2. Backing into parking spaces seems to be not only a "Thai thing," but also an "Asian thing." I lived in Hong Kong for some years, and they all do the same thing. I suspect it has something do with the fact that the parking spaces are smaller than in the west, and it is easier to do it like this? In any event, I adopted the practice in HK and in Thailand.

A relative once shorted out the A/C or the compressor when he start his car engine without turning off the A/C first. He too didn't believe or can't be bother until it happened.

There is a dozy cow lives across the road from me.

Many a morning she has asked me for help in getting her car to start.

Every time I just turn off the a/c, radio, and whatever other crap she hasnt turned off.

Turn the ignition and the engine fires up, simple really, but this little miss hello kitty cant seem to get it through her thick head to turn everything off be turning off the ignition.

Must have been an invisible bottle/ can then, LOL.

No, definitely an engine problem, Unless he's got a built in switch to add sound effects to his car engine, there was a real problem, I just don't think disconnecting the battery fixed it.

Since we are having a dear abby kind of thread (my fault I know) here's another one.

Why do some locals most upcountry folk do this thing with their arms- a quick extend type movement like they are trying to unlock their elbows or something? Is it to do with extending wiper blades?

Why do people sitting in the back of open pickups point they are going the same way as the vehicle  .

The heat from the glass in the sun can melt the rubber.

Ditto.

This adds excessive wear on the vehicle, and thus devalues it.

Then when you trade it in. It is worth less.

In some condos there are people that come around and wash cars every night for a flat monthly fee. After they are done they leave the wipers up so you know they've been......

reverse parking is much smarter in thailand because the parking spaces are quite small and you will often have someone double parked when you wish to exit the space.

for you guys to ask this question makes me think u do not drive in bkk as it would be obvious to you.

It is much easier to reverse park into a car space and it is much easier to drive out of the space, especially when in a shopping centre like Big "C" or likewise where there is limited turning space to park.

As far as the wipers go, they are lifted to stop the rubber being bent permanently in one direction as this stops them wiping the windscreen properly. It also stops them from becoming brittle and burning out from the excess heat from the glass.

BigC were I sometimes shop has massive VIP parking for Chevrolet's, no issue at driving into them.

Well I dont have a problem either, however I quite often have a smoke in the parking area waiting for the little lady to finish shopping. Thai's are hopeless at parking and thats why there is so much damage to the cars there.:ermm:

The wipers mold into an arc on a hot screen and so make a noise on the return sweep that drives one up the wall. :)

BINGO,

spot on trans B)

Another more important question: why do people leave plastic bottles filled with water in front of their car wheels while parking overnight?

So dogs don't piss on the wheels.

True and correct!

We have a winner! but, the other day, I saw a dog pissing all over the wheels and didn't care about the water bottles. The soi dogs are getting smarter. hehe

Works for me, but remember to only half fill the bottles....it`s a bit like puting old cd disks in your garden borders, cats and dogs don`t like their own reflection while doing their dirties...TRUE....Try staring at your dog, he will always break eye contact first..

The old Mighty X, she said no power steering, difficult when it comes to parking...SOLD !!! Now the new double cab Toyota Vigo Prerunner, there's power steering...still she can't park ! How did you pass ? "Oh~ last time easy, ฿500 between theory papers and i passed...practical test ??? Very easy... i rented the smallest car "Mira" "

When reversing a vehicle, the front wheels become the rear wheels, rear wheel stearable vehicles are more maneuverable. It's why forklift trucks nearly always have rear wheel steering, and why tail dragger aircraft can turn on the spot ;)
