ICT MINISTRY HAS SET UP A FRAMEWORK ON PROCUREMENT OF COMPUTERS FOR STUDENTS

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry has set up a framework on procurement of 250,000 computers for students, by dividing into categories corresponding to the number of the students. It expects to begin the bidding process in January next year.

ICT minister Sora-at Klinpratoom (สรอรรถ กลิ่นประทุม) revealed that the sub-committee on procurement of computers under the 'computers for student' project has agreed to divide the categries for procurement based on the number of students in each school. If there are more than 400 students in one school, the Ministry will allocate 13 computers parts to that school and will let vocational students build the computers. If the school has less than 400 students, the Ministry will let them buy computers made by well-known computer manufacturers. As for the attributes of computer, Mr. Sora-at expects to reach a conclusion by November 14. It is expected that the computers in the program will cost 15,000 baht each.

Mr. Sora-at said that the bidding process for the procurement could start in January, 2006, through e-auction system and the computers will be delivered by May 2006.

The usual warning: this is a government of Thailand announcement. Please let us know when those computers arrive in your school, are assembled, and actually work. Doughnuts are on me in Hua Hin if it happens.

Thank you.

^Of course, they're bound to be selling *something, somewhere, to someone* to get their tea money- and this one sounds like tea money galore!

But even if they do sell the computers (and they're not just empty boxes or 10 year old 386s), there's no guarantee that the schools which "buy" them will actually have electricity.
