Sorry if this is answered somewhere but I didn't know how to word the question in the search engine :). I am thinking about changing from retirement visa to marriage visa to free up some money for the building of the house. What happens if the wife should die. I read here that if you divorce. At the moment of divorce the marriage visa become null and void. Is this true of death of wife? I don't think she is going to die before me---- I'm just got curious about how the law works in this matter.

If the reason for the extension (not visa) being issued no longer exists then neither does your permission to stay, so married and she dies you are no longer married and you have to make other arrangements.

They will give you a little time to sort yourself out in those circumstances.

My advice would be to stay "retirement" as it has nothing to do with relationships and is easier to renew etc.

Yes - you could always return to retirement at any time so not a big deal. Just remember that it is easier for all if you use retirement so if you show ability to qualify for that it is what they will want to issue. Obviously if you do not have the funds to qualify it is not an issue.

Just remember, the local Immigration offices cannot approve an extension to support a Thai spouse. All applications that are given to the local offices are sent to BKK for approval and the requirements are much more stringent.

It is more paperwork and a check of living arrangements but it is normally a routine approval however - officials do not accept paperwork that will not be approved (for there own sake). :D

It has nothing to do with property and they may not even enter your residence but they are charged with verification that those using Thai wife extension of stay criteria are actually living as a couple.

Sorry, I might have misled you. I was thinking that the general questions of wills, inheritance and subsequent planning would (as in my case now) be occupying my mind much more than thoughts about my type of visa.

Actually was afraid it could be taken several ways so thanks for the clarification. Perhaps visa is the more tangible issue, along with housing, for them now. Most Thai I suspect take little interest in future material planning issues.
