Shopping For A Camera In Bangkok

Featured Replies

Well, my camera looks like it is on it's way out, need to get a new one.

A pocket-sized one, Canon or Panasonic.

There is no end of camera shops in the city, but can anyone recommend a place for good deals, maybe even (shudder!) some sort of guarantee if the thing dies a few days after I buy it? I'm thinking of starting out in MBK or Pranthip. I know about the markets around the end of Yowarat, suspect most of that stuff is counterfeit.

Pantip will have some good prices. You may be worth investing some time at the camera shops in Fortune Town on Ratchada.

Maybe this thread will help..

I recently bought a Canon G12 from Fortune Town. But really, once you have established you are not getting ripped off they are all the same.

I have a Panasonic Lumix FT1 which is good for work as is waterproof and can be washed, drop resistant etc. The GF has a cheaper Sony I picked up in Tesco which has the SD card option. The Sony takes better pictures than the Panasonic and was about a 1/4 the price.

As already suggested try somewhere like Fortune Town and you can have a look in Tesco for a baseline price and then there are the specialist shops for similar and more up market options. I believe that a Samsung I purchased previously at MBK for the GF (her idea) was a fake or second grade and did not last long. The Sony from Tesco has all the guarantee papers etc and in original box with all the bits, so 99% sure is genuine and no problems so far.

Have a look at Tohome dot com and Powerbuy co thailand for some online pricing as well.

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Yeah, I found when shopping the prices will eventually get to a norm, and then other prices will be about the same. The initial quest is to find the norm. But then it's a matter of the myriad models out there.

Lit, thanks for the micro-review, it reminds me how good the Cybershots can be. Last I looked at them, a few years ago, it seemed like they were putting out a new model every month, which made it difficult to decide which one to get.

I've been using Canons for maybe 8 years now. The present one uses AA batteries, which beats having to keep a special charger just for it. Good to hear Sony had models using SD cards instead of their own memory stick.
