BINJAI, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- A three-headed baby was reportedly born in North Sumatra, Indonesia, this weekend, medical officials told local media on Monday. The baby is not expected to survive for long.

The baby boy was born on Saturday in the Indonesian city of Binjai, which is located in North Sumatra province. Although the infant weighs four kilograms (8.8 pounds), the baby's health condition is worrying doctors and family members as only one body is holding the three heads.

Dimyana, the doctor in charge of the baby's care at the intensive care unit of the Kesrem Binjai hospital, told the Antara news agency that the baby is coping with his medical condition and has been willing to drink fluids.

But doctors at the hospital told Antara that he should be transported to Medan where he can receive medical treatment with the use of better and more modern facilities at the Hajj Adam Malik hospital and better his chances of survival.

However, the baby's father is an unskilled worker at a local shop in Binjai and the family lacks the proper funds to travel to Medan, as they are struggling to pay the hospital bills. The family is hoping a benefactor will step up and help them with the rare medical case.

The cause of the abnormality is possibly caused by neural tube defect, Dimayana explained, which is a relatively common birth defect which can result in different types of abnormalities such as spina bifida and anencephaly, or absence of the brain.
