Govt Affirms New FROC Office Safe from Floods

The energy minister maintains that the building that is being used as the headquarters for the Flood Relief Operations Center will not be flooded.

Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan said he believes the Energy Complex Building, the new center for the Flood Releif Operations Center, will be spared any flooding.

Pichai said PTT, the building's owner, put in place flood prevention measures a month ago, as it reckoned that overflow could reach the road in front of the building.

The minister said that if the road becomes really flooded, water levels will not exceed 80 centimeters and that a makeshift road has been built to allow access to the building.

It is one meter higher than the ground and the road behind it is linked to the Kampaeng Phet 2 Expressway.

He said the building also has a helipad on its roof and that it has a system to produce clean water and electricity and store food in the event of an emergency.

Tourists assured of travelling convenience

30169229-01.jpg

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has come up with measures to facilitate foreign tourists' travelling to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

First, TAT and Thai Hotels Association should jointly check the number of tourists departing for the airport and provide transportation to Airport Rail Link Makkasan Station. State Railway of Thailand should be alerted, if train services are insufficiently provided.

Second, from the station, travellers should be escorted by police officers to the airport. Suvarnabhumi police should be alerted for the fast-track service.

Third, tourist police must work with Airports of Thailand in allocating special rest area for the travellers and facilitating late check-ins, flight changes, or others. The Immigration Office should also be contacted for fast-track service.

Tourism and Sports Permanent Secretary Suwat Sidthilaw, chairing a meeting on Wednesday when the measures were agreed upon, said that the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s data showed that as of Oct 27, tourist attractions in 20 provinces have been affected by the floods.

Though October marks the beginning of Thailand’s tourism high season, tourist arrivals to Thailand have slowed down sharply in October with the daily peak of 40,528 on Oct 1. The number slumped to 22,197 on Oct 31.

SET fund split for flood victims

The Nation

The Stock Exchange of Thailand and associations in the capital market have mobilised nearly Bt400 million, with anticipation that they would achieve the goal to raise a total of Bt500 million soon.

Initially earmarked to finance inundated industrial estates’ rehabilitation, the fund would be split to help individual flood victims.

"We reached an agreement to extend urgent assistance to flood victims, which are of huge number. Meanwhile, the government and financial institutions stand ready to help the business sector as well as to improve infrastructure," Sompol Kiatpaibool, chairman of the SET as executive chairman of the fund, said after a meeting with related associations on Nov 4.

Chanin Vongkusolkit, president of Thai Listed Companies Association, said that the association is ready to provide financial and non-financial supports.

Brokerage houses also contributed all brokerage fees on Oct 28, when the daily turnover was the highest in the past week, to the fund. They also promised manpower supports.

On Nov 25, the Capital Market Academy will also host a charity programme on ModerNine TV, to mobilise public donations.

The exchange also postponed and cancelled some events scheduled for this month.
