New to the site even though I have lived in Thailand on and off for years. Expect to be permanent there soon. I was wondering if anybody knew of any skillful computer repairers in Udon Thani. Where I am now if your computer has a virus and it goes for repair they tend to wipe it and put a copy windows programme on with a copy antivirus which doesn't work. Although I back up to an external hard drive I wouldn't want to back up to that a memory that I thought had a virus.

Can anyone help.

make multi copies of backup; once a month perhaps;

restore using one that runs smoothly

You can purchase a genuine Windows version for about 5,000 baht,or use a copy.

Please use pirate bayand download AVG full version (works perfect, good for seven years!).

I’d recommend to run AVG Tune up 2011 as well, (alsoavailable on pirate bay) and you’ll never have any problems with a virus, Trojanhorse, or anything else regarding software.

I’m running an XP copy that works fine for a long time, withoutany problems. Good luck!

Thanks to both of you for your replies.

Do backups now to external hard-drive but between backups always have additional spreadsheets etc. Was bothered about backingup a virus inadvertantly and then trying to get rid of it.

Have genuine Windows on both UK and Thai purchased laptops with Norton 360 on UK. AVG recommended to me have heard it is very good and free. My UK neighbour who runs an e-business recommended it but he also said that with a copy the windows programme updates would not be available in full.

Reason I originally asked was that although quite competent with computers I have my limits and if there was expertise in Udon would have been good to know where it was. From what I have seen in Sawang Daen Din there is no reliable repairer and my Thai is not up to IT conversation standard, suppose I should improve it.

Thanks again your thoughts are much appreciated.

On the topic of pc repars in Thailand.................

A Dutch bloke who I know near me recently had me round to get his air card working. No big deal, and I thought I'd do a control panel, system look; just to see what his HP 431 notbook had. Now, his misses had told my girlfriend that soon after he'd bought it, with "help" from his thai wifes "brother" and his "nephew" (who knows eh ?), that he'd sufferd what I know as "the blue screen of death". Apparently, it "went back to the shop to be fixed", and after a week (eh ?) it came back a runner. God only knows what state his HP warranty is in now. Well, the system showd his hard drive as 70 Gigs. I said nothing, as I didn't want to upset him; but surely the thing should have at least a 320 Gig in it.

Do you recon I should tell him what has almost certainly happened, or leave it alone?

I think I would so that they are aware in case anything else goes wrong. I originally posted because I had seen some of these 'repairs' done on my partners PC. It wasn't until they were done that I realised how poor the service was. I have seen other laptops/PCs where I live poorly repaired, it seems the local places are trusted by locals but many don't understand what is done. Where I am they just wipe and put in a copy programme.

Suggest doing a post relating to the area where you live to see if there is a farang expert in your area and put the Dutch guy in touch. I got a brilliant reply from ozzyfan269 and will be in touch with him.

Just my thoughts

Not sure if this is what HP built in to his pc but it say's:

HARD DISK DRIVES (2)

LOCAL DISC © 68.3 GBS

NEW VOLUME (D) 387 GBS.

God only knows !

I think it will be interesting to see what happens when I show him microsoft updates, cas if his OS ain't pukka; he wont get any!

Hi bentarm

I couldn't understand the PC (now deceased) at the house my partner has. But the copy had the option to receive Windows updates turned off. When I got back to Uk I asked a computer wizz friend of mine how a copy could receive the updates and said the option was turned off. His opinion was that some updates may go into a copy maybe for security or firewalls but programme updates wouldn't. When the PC died I bought my partner a laptop with a genuine Windows programme from the local town (could only find one) and this had all the 'genuine' packaging from the HP factory in China where they are now made since October last year. this also had the update option turned off when it was bought which still puts doubts in my mind. Would be interesting to know if any updates do go in. I will recheck the laptop next week to see if it has anything like you describe above.

One interesting thing my friend said was that if it is a copy a genuine antivirus programme probably wouldn't work as it would be looking to link onto a genuine Windows programme. Might be worth checking this as all the local PCs/laptops I have seen in the villages near me have copy trial packages in as well that don't work.

Good luck.
