Saudi hackers leak credit card information of thousands of Israelis

JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- Hackers have posted the credit card information of thousands of Israelis on the Internet, local media reported on Tuesday.

The details of about 15,000 Israeli credit cards were posted on Monday evening on the One sports website by an international group of hackers. The group appeared to have targeted Israeli credit card companies Isracard, Leumi Card and Cal, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The three credit card companies said they blocked Internet purchases for the affected cards and were planning to contact cardholders as soon as possible. Isracard and Leumi Card said the victims of identity theft would be compensated.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Israel said customers will not bear responsibility for any fraudulent use of their cards. It recommended customers to carefully check their credit card statements and report any problem to the relevant company as soon as possible.

Saudi hackers claimed on Monday to have published the credit card details of as many as 400,000 Israelis. They published the list of cards, names and other personal details.

According to Army Radio, the hackers encouraged readers to use the information posted online to make purchases, and said they would continue to publish more account information already in their possession.

Read into this thread what you may, but the OP says "by an international group of hackers." Unless someone has information to the contrary, it does not appear that the Saudi gov't had anything to do with this.

Yes, that seems correct. The hacker claims to be from the Wahhabi Saudi Internet group, part of an international Anonymous hacking group. See attached link for more info.

Note the measured response. No claims of state sponsored cyber terrorism. Everyone faces the same problems/risks with these groups. Personally, I think they did consumers a favour by exposing the flaw, by showing that this idiotic rush to embrace cloud surfing and virtual servers carries serious risks. The credit cards had been used to purchase these services and were apparently hacked from general commerce sites. I should think that the promoters of the cloudds and related services have a major problem on their hands. Anyone want to bet that Microsoft, Google and other big MNEs are crapping themselves right now?

If/when the Saudis catch the culprits, will there be any penalty for them? Probably no more than a petty slap on the wrist. In the dunes, they're motto is 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' ....they know all about 'enemies' 'vindictiveness' 'underhandedness' 'betrayal' in dem parts.

I doubt the Saudis will catch these people. It will most likely be UK authorities, where some of the hackers are most likely situated working in conjunction with the USA and Germans or Dutch where some of the servers might be located. Typically, these hackers are situated in out of the way countries.

The internet in Saudi is closely controlled. There is satellite service through the UAE which is available, but it is still monitored within Saudi.

I would be very surprised if any of the hackers (I hate hackers!) were physically in Saudi Arabia.

More likely in Europe, Pakistan, the US than Saudi.

Not that closely controlled. Anyone with an ounce of savvy can access the web using VPN bypassing Saudi controls and monitoring. A number of compounds provide internet services via sattelite services. Again no controls. Most young Saudi males couldnt survive without their daily doze of porn.
