Nightmarish 'supersoldier' ants with huge heads and jaws have been created by activating ancient genes.

Scientists believe the monster ants may be a genetic throwback to an ancestor that lived millions of years ago.

Scientists say they can create the supersoldiers at will by dabbing normal ant larvae with a special hormone - the larvae then develop into supersoldiers rather than normal soldier or worker ants.

So, does anyone think it is a good idea to genetically alter modern insects (or animals) to be like their large -and likely deadlier - prehistoric ancestors? What purpose does that serve?

You get your research published in the Daily Mail.

I disagree with all sorts of genetic modification, except just possibly for medical purposes. It's a bit like introducing a species into an alien environment; it either dies out, which is fine, or becomes rampant because there are no natural predators to keep it under control. Who knows what the result of these genetic modifications might be?

one of my many wives had a family member who was raising huge double breasted turkeys the old woman told me the idea was to yeild more meat and feed more people but they were to big for the ovens!

Agreed, Birdy!

I vote for the extermination of the highest life form as we know it.
