Kev82 Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 (edited) Hi guys, I have searched this topic and couldn't find anything, but sorry if it is repeated. I am going to be spending a long holiday in Thailand, doing all the South islands. I've noticed that the price to do PADI Open Water varies a lot for the same dive sites/areas depending on where you book it from (i.e phuket, phi phi, ao nang all very different prices but same sites). I will be going to all of those places and also to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, but I've heard the diving is not as good there (but it is cheaper and some people say it's brilliant, any opinions?) so I don't mind where I do it as long as it is going to be with a good company at a decent price! I've done some fun dives before and really want to get certified and it's a big part of my budget so any help would be great! daveh Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 There doesn't seem to be much of a question here. Where are you from and how long will you be spending in Thailand? When I got PADI certified in California, there were basically three parts. The course work and exam, the pool work, then the open water dives. The course work, was basically the instructor teaching out of the book, then there was an exam to follow. I can't remember how long this took, but no more than two days. The pool work involved us swimming some distance (laps) without a BCD, as well as the skill drills (taking off and replacing your mask underwater, clearing your regulator, ...). And the open water was more of the same, but in the freezing cold Pacific off the coast of Monterrey. If you will be in Thailand for a short time, then it may be better to do the course work and pool work where you are located and just do the open water in Thailand. This can save you a bit of time, but unlikely to save you any money.
limbos Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Hi kev, Same answer as on Scubaboard.............
Javabear Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The course work takes a day. You can save yourself the day and do the PADI e-learning at home. Then you will have a short knowledge quiz before you hit the pool for your first day followed by 2 days open water.
doingok Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 i did mine on koh tao and yes you can do the The course work before but price wise just wait till you get here as long as you have the time
