Yingluck's popularity on the wane, Abhsit's on the rise: Abac Poll

The Nation

Although the popularity of the prime minister has slightly dropped while that of the opposition leader is increasing, more than one in two people have no confidence in the two, based on Abac Poll released on Thursday.

From September to this month, PM Yingluck Shinawatra saw her popularity dropped from 38.6 per cent to 34.7 per cent. The profiling of Yingluck's supporters showed that the majority are males in the age group of older than 50 and with less than tertiary education.

In the same period, Democrat Abhisit Vejjajiva enjoyed a slight increase in popularity from 12.9 per cent to 14.2 per cent.

The majority of Abhisit's supporters are university graduates and urban residents.

People living outside the municipal areas, the retirees, and farmers and workers tend to favour Yingluck.

About 57 per cent of students and 54 per cent of urban residents appear to lack the confidence in any politicians.

With the exception of the South, Yingluck's popularity has outpaced that of Abhisit's across the country. Her popularity is strongest in the Northeast (51 per cent).

Only 4.5 per cent of southern residents approve of Yingluck while 38 per cent are confident in Abhisit.

In the Central Region, Yingluck has outpaced Abhisit but almost 60 per cent have no confidence in the two.

The survey was conducted on the national sampling of 4,689 respondents from 17 selected provinces. The margin of error is seven per cent.

The movement is hardly worth a mention, save for the fact that Abhisit's numbers are embarrassing. The removal of the finance minister is downright dangerous and the addition of the alleged Mugabe accomplice is indicative of an absence of common sense and moral leadership, but I doubt most Thais care. There is a moral leadership vacuum in the country. If the Democrats weren't so tainted by their association with multiple military juntas, they'd be at the top of the polls now. Considering the flood situation, I don't know how the PM kept her numbers up.

Maybe Thaksin may start to become desperate to get back this year after all. This will be his last chance to get back at the trough. It's obvious that he can't run the country from Dubai.

Well if 54 to 60% of the thai population (this is what I would call a majority) have no confidence in the politicans/government then maybe the country is making headway. Now if this same majority would do something about the mess that this country is in, then there may be a light at the end of the long tunnel.

As one man said "I have a dream".

You know I am really sick of the Thai news, they can say what they want, even though it's all _ull_hit, made up crap.

You read news outside of Thailand on certain web sites, and the truth will be heard.

The Thai press is full of HOT AIR!!!

Not really, Thaksin has realized that game and is always the first to put in his two bahts worth before anyone else. If anything the foreign media is flawed because Thaksin knows how to play to international media and realizes the importance of it.

Look at Hillary Clinton when she came to Thailand, didn't have a clue what the real story was.

PM's Aprroval Rating Drops

A survey suggests the prime minister's approval rating has fallen but is still ahead of the opposition leader.

Director of the ABAC Poll Research Center Noppadon Kannika said the survey was conducted between December 1 and January 18 on roughly 4,700 people above 18 in 17 provinces namely Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao, Suphan Buri, Nan, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Amnatchareon, Si Sa Ket, Loei, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Surat Thani, Yala and Songkhla.

Noppadon said the research showed the approval rating of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has slightly dropped from 38.6 percent in September to 34.7 percent in January while that of opposition and Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has risen to 14.2 from 12.9 percent.

He went on to say the number of people who said neither Yingluck nor Abhisit is their ideal politician has increased from 48.5 percent to 51.1 percent.

Classifying the respondents by their professions, he said the study found Yingluck is popular among 41.3 percent of the unemployed, 38.7 percent of retirees and 37.6 percent of farmers and daily paid workers while 57.4 percent of students said they are nonpartisan.

By region, the country's first female premier still enjoyed the highest popularity in the Northeast where her approval rating was 51.2 percent, followed by 36.8 percent in the North, 32.2 percent in Bangkok, 27.6 percent in the Central region and 4.5 percent in the South.

The poll suggested almost 60 percent of respondents in the Central region said they do not trust both Yingluck and Abhisit.

Not too dissimilar to the UK at one time where many Labour supporters would not go to the polls unless their party promised not to increase the taxes, and therefore the retail price, of beer and cigarettes.

Note the profile of those who support the exiled criminal. People who have the intelligence to think and are not so easily manipulated either support Abhisit or ignore the whole fiasco. Those in the fields, very often people who can hardly read or write are the ones used as cannon fodder to feed Thaksin's greedy aspirations. You can't fault Thaksin's mass psychology. He knows that he should target the lumpenproletariat - don't forget they believe that Thaksin thinks. What thy don't know is what he thinks about!

Only 51% for Yingluck even in the northeast? huh.png Would have expected 70% at least, considering she's the pretty face. Makes me wonder what would be the approval rate for Chalerm, Jatuporn et al.

Abhisits rate is really shockingly low, looks like something earthshattering must happen before he could ever think of becoming PM again.

The 2-3% changes seem to be rather irrelevant with a 7% error margin btw.coffee1.gif

" People who have the intelligence to think and are not so easily manipulated either support Abhisit ", Really?!! I think I can claim to be intelligent, and definitely am not easy to manipulate, but I could not, and never have supported Abhisit. This does not mean I automatically support Yingluck either, neither do I ignore the entire sorry mess, even though I am a farang living in Thailand I am affected the same as everyone else by the failures of government. I think living for two months in a metre of floodwater entitles me to an opinion and my opinion is with the nearly 60% of Thais who have no confidence in either political party.

He's not thinking about Sauer Kraut. He's Thai. It's a connection you'll never understand. The people in the fields are not as dumb as you think.

Sadly the people just don't have the will or ability to do anything about it. Thailand will end up like the Philippines or Indonesia. Mark my words.

Or maybe they are just fed up with their choice of government being overturned repeatedly - just a wild guess!

My country, the West of Thailand at the Burmese border never vote for Thaksin or the red mob.

The "Reds" (many good friends) here, agree that they have been the cannon fodder for the new ammats.

They see, that the new gouvernment cut the subsidies for the local (democrat) communities.

The garbage collection is reduced to 1/3, the Health Stations's fund for medicaments 1/2 etc.

Support for Thaksin is a demographic time bomb. Like it or not the traditional local fuedal system that the red shirts are based on has little support among the young. In another decade even in the northeast they may be replaced. Younger people have more education and access to the internet and other sources of information and don't rely on the corrupt local officials who've been robbing them for decades for information.

I Totally agree with this, here's why: my thai girl friend of 9 years is educated, lucky for me & comes from a business owner family - she, family and most of her friends all CANNOT stand Thaksin - now look at some of her uneducated friends and yeah there for Thaksin...& yes 500 baht & other BS comes into the equation...

HOWEVER, I can thank 'Thaksin thai rack thai' on the behalf of 'FALANG' for increasing Thai visa's Threefold, AND overseas postage fees to name a few...angry.png

The 60% figure was taken from a single region. The same number from other regions / all of Thailand was not reported.

Yingluk's popularity base parallels that of oz's own Pauline Hanson - I assume educated Thais might be similarly embarassed.

At the going rate, Mark will be back as PM by July.

After another GOOD coup though.

Do you think former-PM Abhisit would accept the job, directly following a coup, or would he insist on an election, before trying to form a coalition-government like his last one ? I myself suspect the latter.

And with the latest round, of stacking the current government with ever more Thaksin-loyalists & ex-employees, at what point would it effectively constitute a coup, good or otherwise ? At what point would PM-Yingluck refuse to go along with this ongoing-process ?

Interesting times ...
