What word?

Xampi?

Google gives several references, but nothing offensive?

the word "stupid", maybe xampi too, havent tried it, I got stoped on the p word that doesnt exist in Thailand before but thats understandable, but I cant figure why Thais would find the word "stupid" offensive

For some reason the word stupid seems to be offenseive to Thai's. I was building an extra room to my house a few years ago and got into a argument with my thai brother-in-law and somewhere along the line I said "do you thimk that I am stupid". I guess that he thought that I was telling him that he was stupid! He has not said one word to me since, and that was five years ago. In some ways it's great, he doesn't ask to borrow money which he never pays back , my car or my tools. But I never intended to offend him.

I'm also very curious to learn why "stupid" translates so badly in Thai. It's one of the words I have to consciously keep myself in check with, I'd love to understand why.

Of course many words came be made offensive by their delivery - I'm not talking about an aggressive use of the word.

In Scotland it's a very common word, although if I spend more than a week in Scotland I end up speaking my native tongue so it would be daft, not stupid.

When my other half says something silly I daren't tell her "don't be stupid" or I'd be spending a night on the sofa...
