Actual Health Insurance Prices In Chiang Mai

flying

Recommended Posts

I know we have an insurance forum & I have watched it for some time.

But I never see an actual price quoted...

I am curious what a healthy 50 yr old male can expect to pay

per year for decent health insurance

No outpatient care needed as that is quite affordable

But something just to deal with any major medical/accident that may surprise.

Just a general idea if you have an example & what insurance company?

I have looked at BUPA & Thai Health so far.

Thanks

Why not ask for a quote from some of the local insurance companies rather than waiting for a quote being posted which may have no relevance to your quote?

Most insurance companies require information on your previous health etc, this is all factored into the cost of your cover.

Here is a company that has actual prices

http://aainsure.net/health.html

I have had them for 3 years...

Been great - But I have not have not had an experience where I needed to make a claim

Those prices are are on the absolute high end of the spectrum. You can get insurance with pretty good coverage for a fraction of that. For some reason that company has prices listed in USD??? In Thailand? There are literally dozens and dozens of insurance companies in Thailand.

Hmmm... i wonder about that... i was told (and i might very well be misinformed) that only 3 REAL companies are licensed in thailand (from an international perspective)... BUPA, LMG and ???.....

I have heard of many companies that sell life insurance and then will attach a "rider" (at extra cost of course) that includes varying levels of health insurance... but if you could point me in the direction of a "cheap" health insurance plan/company, i would be willing to check them out.

THANKS!

Did you actually look at the coverage? $1,000,000 coverage for $1405/annum if 55-60 with most things at 100% coverage. I've looked at several insurance costs and that is hardly high end of the spectrum. Bupa for the same age bracket will cost at least that or more for only 1,000,000 BAHT coverage and most things not at 100% of procedure. They have also been recommended by others on TV.

I'm not 50 yet, but I'm interested in this thread as I pay $2700 with BUPA (I''m 37). My Wife (34) pays $1700 with Bupa.

Coveres everything I need and can imagine, but I do wonder what the premium will be when I am 50 years old. Hence, I am interested in this thread.

Covers medivac.

No Outpaitient costs are covered.

Cost of Medicine is not covered.

Cancer etc is covered.

Specialists costs are covered

X-Ray MRI are covered.

Child birth is covered.

Limit is US$1,500,000 (if I remember correct).

AA hooked us up with an LMG plan, major medical, no OPD, over 60 male 16,000 baht per year, over 45 wife 9,000, teenage girl 6,000. Girl has had one claim, they were helpful, fair and payed within one month. The coverage may be ok for Thailand residency, not enough for US or Canada. The CM office at MeeChok is helpful and efficient; communicate in fluent English or Thai, by phone, email, skype.

It may be O.K for you but its over-kill for me. I was paying about 12,000 THB a year for one Thai Health policy and it was much more than I needed. The g/f (30's) had a policy with AXA. I think it was, 4100 THB per year. They paid every claim including a lengthy stay at Sriphat. No questions asked. Shop around. Some policies are marketed mainly for farangs and far more than normal plans sold in Thailand.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I am aware folks are different & have different needs but, I was just curious of general ranges based on what I posted.

So I was happy to see a few say what they are actually paying & at what age.

I know it is cheaper there than the USA where I have paid my own all my life since I am self employed but

am still surprised at the wide ranges.

On the one hand you have some folks saying $2700 @ 37

Some at $1400 @ 50-55

Then 12k THB/ $360 & said it was more than needed....

That is quite a range :)

Thanks though & keep them coming as it is interesting plus the links are helpful.

Thank You

Much more than you needed?

But if you are unlucky to become seriousl ill/have a major accident you may find out that the hospital bills can get massive, and your 12 000 Baht insurance wont be enough.

I dumped the 12,000 THB plan years ago when the premiums went up to 16,000+. It covered everything and was a very good deal at the time. I forget the policy limits but it was very high; comparable with much more expensive plans. I don't believe that plan is still available.

I just took a look at the link I posted and noticed that Thai Health has just recently (like in the last 4-5 days) raised their premiums substantially -- like 60-70%!

If you read all the exclusions on that policy and consider that their annual maximum coverage per year is pretty low even for their most expensive policy, it is very expensive for the coverage provided.

I realize you said it just went up by 60-70%, but I hope you also realize that they state they can double the premium from what is stated on the website when you renew: 5. Renewal year premium of each insured person may be charged higher, up to 100 percent of standard premium, according to underwriting experience of the previous policy year

And if you submit too many claims, they can cancel your insurance: The company reserves the right not to renew each insured person within the first 2 years after start coverage.

I have insurance with higher coverage limits that will cover me worldwide, including the US, for less than this policy.

Good point. But I think any insurance company can raise your premiums or cancel your insurance if you submit claims. Can't they?

I'm looking for another health plan for Thailand only. I only go to the USA once every several years if I absolutely have to, or to Europe, and always buy travel insurance good for 30 days. Actually I would go to Europe more often if I could!

My wife works for AIA and they will not cancel policies (once a one year qulaifying period has been completed (I think))

Their cover for a 50 year old (hospital benefits) would be around 20k baht a year ish.

That's interesting. I used them when I went to Europe in 2002 as a travel insurance provider. The coverage was very cheap. After I had the policy for one year they said I could not be considered a traveler anymore so they offered to convert the policy to an ex-pat insurance policy (The Patriot policy) which could be renewed for up to 2 years maximum. After that, there was no way to get further coverage with them. Have things changed? And don't you have to be a resident of the USA? (I haven't looked at the links just yet). I paid US $50.00 per month for catastrophic coverage for 3 years. I never put in a claim but I recall the policy was excellent.

Putting price to one side, 50 is a good time to get a reliable health insurance and then stick with it. If you think you may move internationally in the future make sure the policy can move with you, as changing later could introduce exclusions to existing problems. Bear in mind that many international policies will not cover US and Canada.

Once you're past 50 then you are far more likely to need some treatment, all the crap like prostate, diabetes 2 etc. can crop up then.

Oh yes it is, those are US prices. With only a modest deductible I can get the same thing here in the US from any of the "Big Blues" and they will cover expenses incurred at any of the better Thai hospitals, including Ram in Chiang Mai. There is affordable coverage from Thai insurance companies in Thailand, maybe not US$1,000,000, but if you need that much coverage in Thailand you are already probably better off dead.
