Clean-up plan for Lumpini

BANGKOK: -- A major renovation of Lumpini Park is in the pipeline, Bangkok Deputy Governor Samart Ratchapolsitte said yesterday.

Eight aspects of the park will be subjected to an overhaul that includes improving the public toilets and park buildings, and providing more seating areas and ramps for people with disabilities, Samart said.

Security would be beefed up to suppress vice activities and a stricter control of vehicles allowed in the park, Samart said. Stray dogs will be removed, cleaning schedules increased, more garbage bins provided and specialised pumps would be installed in ponds to tackle polluted water.

Kasetsart University researchers will look for ways to sterilise doves and a survey conducted to see if monitor lizards attack people, he said.

The swimming pool will now be open from 7am to 8.30am everyday, in addition to the regular times, while the library will be renovated and equipped with IT technology and the activity centres opened earlier, Samart said.

Officials will also be assigned to enforce no-smoking regulations.
