I'm a Thai residing in Singapore. I was born here in singapore ( doesn't qualify me to be a singaporean as my dad was a thai). I speak no thai at all.

Recently my application for permanent residence in singapore has been approved but my thai passport was being rejected because it's not valid (Stamps chops were watermarked because i left it in the washing machine due to my carelessness)

The singapore immigration wants me to get a new passport before they can officially grant me the permanent status. I've got till 21st January to complete the PR formalities.

I can't waste anymore time getting a new passport. Here's the big problem.

As you know Thai males are required to serve the military service for two years, and I last been to Thailand was in 2001. I was still under 21.

Should I go back to Thailand to make my new passport? I'm afraid of being detained as the immigration officials will ask me lots of questions regarding the military service issue.

Or should I play safe and appy for a new passport at the embassy in Singapore? Wait for 2 weeks to a month for a new passport, my temporary employment pass expires on the 14th of january in Singapore. That's barely more than a month away.

Do u have any thai friends that came across a very similar situation as me?

Please advice!

Go back to Bangkok, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Passport Division, and apply for a new passport. I reckon' you will get it the same day for some 1,500 Baht. Bring tambien baan and thai ID s well (the might have eveything on-line these days, though).

MFA passport web site is currently hacked or "under construction":

Sigh....

Thanks for your advice,

but the thing is is it risky for me to go back as you know the thai law states that thai males are required to serve the military service when they are 21?

Further I speak no thai and serving the thai military service is the last thing i would do.

Please advice.

David.

Have you ever had any indication that you have been selected for military service ?

If not then I think you are worrying too much

Not everyone has to serve only those whose name is drawn.

David where is your mom from ??? its better to get all the documents needed before you visit the Go back to Bangkok, Ministry of Foreign Affairs or passport division....

If you dont do it by 21 January then i think Singapore SIR will reject your application and once they reject it its gonna be hard to apply for it again....

If you get your Singapore PR approved you too will be liable for National Service in Singapore... I served mine for 3 hard years with SPForce.....

LOL i think to serve Thai NS is much more better only 1 year i guess.. :o

Hi,

If I were you I'd go to the Thai Embassy there and apply for a new passport.

I'm also Thai and live in the US. I've been back to Thailand about 5 times and the immigration officer never ask me about military service. I don't think they ask that kind of question there. Although, if your passport is messed up, you might be detain until they can check it out. I am not sure though. I know someone who went back on an expired passport and was detained for a few hours, sent home, and had to report to the Umpur the next day.

Anyway, I'd call the Thai Embassy, they should be able the help you.
