manarak
As this is turning into a helmet debate thread, I'd like to repeat here my point of view that I am against a general obligation to wear helmets. Any driver older than 18 should decide for himself if he wants to wear one or not. I think it would be a good thing if the death reate of petty criminals, gangstahs and other rebelz on the roads was higher. Personally, I almost always wear my helmet (99%). billd766
But, you see, far more often the option is exercised to accelerate into it, as this thread attests so well. Agreed, judgment and driving skill make all the difference, but most of our farangs driving in Thailand seem lacking in those. About the only thing saving our accident victims from much worse is that they weren't on a big bike. If they were, they likely died, as often happens in PTY to tourists (particularly Arab tourists) renting big bikes. I've had a big bike myself and I liked it a lot, miss it sometimes, but I don't fool myself that it was safer than my smaller bikes. It definitely wasn't. sorry but I disagree, I'd far rather be on my big bike at 100kmph than a small bike, you said it yourself - First, the size of the small bike discourages going "100kmph". And that's a good thing normally. Still, if I crashed at "100kmph," which is the real point (you missed) that concerns helmet safety, I'd rather do it on a small bike. A crash on a small bike is less likely to put stress on a helmet than one on a big bike. It depends on the nature of the crash (maybe your butt took the whole impact ), but you can't think of any scenario in which the opposite would hold true. you said it yourself - it's to do with the your abilities and how you choose to ride, the example you gave above referring to middle eastern tourists hiring bike bikes and ending up in high speed accidents tells me they had neither ability or experience and they often ride these big bikes without helmet or as near as, I generally potter about pattaya being overtaken by both thais and falangs on small bikes, it doesn't bother me and it is not what this thread is about either. Most of the people on this forum with big bikes do not fall into the category you suggest in your example. Ah, well, I don't know most of the people on this forum as you obviously do so well, and we're not talking just our members anyway (so don't take it too personally), but one member here, billd766 above, DID admit how he shot out from a stop and promptly ran into another vehicle--which is suggestive. And that was on a lowly Phantom. Though I'd scarcely be shocked if our members do have an inflated opinion of their own driving skills, yet accidents are regularly referenced. In most cases, I'd say, a slower speed would have prevented the accident or made it less worse. Just common sense, really--smedly. Arabs are the most common example, but hardly exclusive. There was, for example, a notable crash few years ago of some Brits who crashed at Big C going north on 2nd Rd traveling at excessive speed on a big bike. Both died. I often think of that accident when I pass the spot. Actually I DIDN'T shoot out for a stop. What I said was that all the lights were red and mine turned to green so I went across partly because I was being pushed by the car behind. The two old ladies RAN THE RED LIGHT, NOT ME, and they ran in to me and not me into them. The police who saw the accident said the same which is why they gave me money and not the other way around. What is suggestive is that you read the post again and try to understand it was not my fault, I was the innocent party.
wana
9000 thb compensation for being run down in an intersection is why i try to drive carefully but nearly every day in bkk i have a close call the problem with even a small accident is you wil probably get blamed anyway being a rich farang in the wrong place even if theres loads of witnesses and the other party is clearly at fault often there is nothing can be done because some kid with no money crashed into you and cant afford compensation anyway even if you can convince the police i was stopped once and a taxi hit the passenger foot peg on the elegance and it busted through his plastic bumper i told him im not paying because he was moving and i was stopped when it happened , i started to call the cops and when he saw i wasnt reaching for the wallet he just said its ok and drove away ,but if the cops came down i probaby would have had to buy him a new bumper

IanForbes
Just this afternoon I saw an idiot farang with no helmet, riding a bike go through a red light while the rest of us were all waiting for the light to go green. He didn't realize it was an advance light where the opposing traffic goes first. Had someone in the oncoming lane jumped the light, or taken off quickly, then there would have been an accident. I see it all the time. My two former girl friends who both died of head injuries were traveling very slowly at the time of their accidents, and other than a few minor scrapes their head was the only part of their body that was damaged. No helmet. Massive part of his scalp was peeled. His lips are horribly ripped up and he lost many teeth. I'll spare you the other gory details. He under went 5 hours of craniotomy surgery today. He will live, but prognosis is unknown. By choosing to not wear a helmet your choosing to put your friends and family through a situation like this. or worse. But hey, it is your choice. In UK, near 50 years ago my mum was making a right turn, queues of traffic on her right. A Samaritan left a gap so she could turn. She proceeded to make the turn and a mod scooter guy was undertaking on the inside of the queue at speed and ploughed into mums motor. All taken to hospital where the lad died of head injuries, no helmet. He was in the next cubical to mums. The lads mum was there at his bedside when he passed away. The mum shouted and screamed at my mum that she killed her son. Mum did nothing wrong and did not face any charges. Mum spent weeks in bed at home suffering the trauma and a full year to recover all cos the guy had no crash hat.

Gary A
I have a friend who rides a little Scoopy every day. It's a little more than a year old and has 22,000 kilometers on it. I told him that if he would promise to wear a helmet, I'd give him a decent one with a good face shield. He declined and told me he doesn't like helmets. I quizzed him about the big flying bugs and asked him if he ever got hit in the eye. He says he has hit a lot of them and they do hurt but has never gotten hit in the eye. I'm not going fast and I think the chances of an accident are pretty slim. (I actually worry more about getting hit by a car or bike when I WALK to the 7-11)...
