The Semantics Of Provincial Thailand

Featured Replies

If you come from London, you are a Londoner.

And if you’re from New York, you’re a New Yorker.

And …..

1. Paris => Parisian

2. LA => Los Angelinos

3. Manchester => Mancunian

And so on.

Hence it is that a man or woman from Bangkok is …. a Bangkokian.

But how about people from other parts of Thailand?

What should we call a woman from Phuket? A Phuketian (as in "Venetian")?

And how about a man from Ayuthaya? Do we consider him an Ayuthonian (as in Old Etonian)?

Chiang Mai puzzles me. The word “mayonnaise” springs to mind.

Thoughts.
