Police and Customs Join Forces in Pseudoephedrine Crackdown

BANGKOK: -- The police and the Customs Department join forces to keep tabs on the illegal import of pseudoephedrine and set out a guideline for coordinating prevention and suppression efforts.

Deputy National Police Chief Police Lieutenant General Jarumporn Suramanee and Commissioner of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Police Lieutenant General Chaiwat Chotima handed over 250 pseudoephedrine testing kits to Customs Department Director-General Somchai Pulsawat to be used by customs officers at import checkpoints.

The testing kit is 100 percent reliable in detecting pseudoephredrine, which is both legally imported and illegally smuggled into the country in the form of other medicines.

Importers of chemicals are required to declare their products, which has to be tested for pseudoephedrine.

The Narcotics Suppression Police and the Customs Department also discussed policies and approaches to prevent and crackdown on the illegal import of pseudoephedrine for use in the production of illicit drugs, as well as the establishment of an intelligence network and coordination between the agencies.

Customs officers will be trained and will be instructed to be on the lookout for the smuggling of the substance.

A special task force will also be deployed to keep an eye on drug smuggling along the border.

Since last October, the police have made 150 successful drug busts, involving 135 million baht's worth of narcotics.
