Thailand evacuates for possible tsunami after major quake off Indonesia

image_20120411180655A115B1B1-D170-C57C-ACB332F4790F6946.jpg

BANGKOK, April 11 -- Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre has issued an evacuation order for residents and tourists along the Andaman coast after a huge earthquake struck off Indonesian Sumatra on Wednesday.

The quake's magnitude was 8.7, according to a revised measurement from the US Geological Survey, and it struck 431 kilometres off the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh.

The tremor was felt as far as in Bangkok where office workers at several high-rise buildings said their workplaces were shaken for 3-5 minutes. Several southern provinces also felt the tremors.

Thai disaster centre director Somsak Khaosuwan urged people along the sea in the Andaman coastal provinces of Phuket, Krabi, Phang-nga, Ranong, Trang and Satun to evacuate to higher ground.

Phuket International Airport was closed on Wednesday following the tsunami warning, Airports of Thailand president Aniruth Thanomkulbutr said, adding that all flights have been cancelled since 4pm.

Large numbers of foreign tourists and local residents in Phuket were seen rushing to higher ground for their safety.

Thailand's Andaman Coastal provinces were hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed around 5,400 people including foreigners and local residents. (MCOT online news)

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY

ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL

MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY

ALREADY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG SOME COASTS.

BASED ON THESE DATA THE THREAT CONTINUES FOR ALL COASTAL AREAS OF

THE INDIAN OCEAN. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE

OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME

OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN

LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO

BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE

TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE

VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST

BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN

SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

RT @tulsathit: Ranong governor says his province can lay back only after it's past 8 pm.

The situation could get dangerously confusing if the 8.3 aftershock at about 6:00pm Thai time causes a tsunami. The governor (and others) may assume any danger is gone by 800pm, only taking into account the original quake.

[edited to change aftershock rating from 8.8 to 8.3]

I'm right by Phuket Airport, but moved to higher ground above my hotel. I am active on shortwave 28.490MHz and in contact with radio hams in Europe - in case there is a major disaster.

I hope that this does not cause any major problems and I wish for the people in anhy danger the best of luck and hope they get the warning, there is no system in place as such. What is weird is that I have had dreams about tsunamis twice in the past 10 days or so...

I sincerely hope that it does not arrive but if it does, I hope people have heeded the warning and moved away from the coast.
