katasyd, why the goober nic?Surely something is better than a goober! On topic the phuket forum has a lot of people that don't actually live here on a full time basis and thus a lot of opinions that don't really count for much.

Interesting thread and totally agree with the OP.

@ 'goober'

If the question asked was 'Are there any kite surfing schools in Phuket' then you would have been spot on to provide a LMGTFY link. I totally agree that a huge amount of posts are pointless and a Google search is far more appropriate. I personally don't feel the need to tell them that they should have used Google but can understand why others may.

The point is he DIDN'T ask that question, he asked if 'Any BM's kite surfed'. Your Google link didn't answer the question he asked, so to me was a bit pointless. When you couple that with your previous reply on the water thread, where you told someone to go and find the answer himself and then gave him inaccurate advice based on what you had read on Google, lead me to make the post where I shared the opinion that your posts weren't very helpful.

Read the forum and we form a opinion without knowing the poster so if you dont like what he posts just ignore it it's just like being in the bar you can talk with your friends but you can hear other conversation's negitive and positive about all sorts of topics and if you dont like what someone is saying just switch off and enjoy yourself.

Just my opinion

Good post, and pretty much agree. However, if you continue with the bar analogy, then what happens if the people at the next table you are struggling to ignore start throwing peanuts at you? What if they start singing so loudly that you can no longer hear your own conversation? Then ignoring them doesn't work any more.

To me the forum is massive and has enough sub forums to cater for every bodies needs, it just needs people to know where the boundaries are of what threads they should be posting on and what ones they should't.

People's desire to post is by far out weighed by their ability to post a decent helpful reply. In other words people trawl through the forum looking to make replies instead of looking to find questions they know the answer to or topics they have a relevant opinion on, so they end up making posts that are off topic, unhelpful and pointless.

For example, my pet hate is people who reply to a thread to tell the OP that he thinks it's a rubbish thread and doesn't want anything to do with it. blink.png

In my opinion that shouldn't be allowed. It will start a fight and get the thread closed before the people who may have wanted to discuss it get the chance.

I don't agree with this 'It's not real life' point of view either. That's just a poor excuse. Normal people will behave in the same way on the internet as they would in real life. To say it's only the internet so we can be obnoxious and rude is a cop out! and then to accuse people of not having thick enough skin is the same. Yes some people are too sensitive but being frustrated with people trashing threads is not the same as having thin skin.

Another huge problem is the personal grudges. Some posters will put that before anything else and so are looking for wholes in certain peoples post to pick at. These wholes would have been left alone if it was somebody else but because it was someone they had previous with they jump all over it.

You stop people posting off topic, you insist that if they haven't got anything of value to add they don't post, the rest would take care of itself. All the time you have members that constantly post in a certain kind of disruptive way but are clever enough to never cross the line and get themselves banned, this forum will never change. There are people out there with thousands and thousands of posts, but if you take a closer look a huge percentage of them are obnoxious, rude, unhelpful and pointless, but always on the right side of the rules. These people ruin forums in my opinion.

They chuck peanuts i throw coconuts they make noise i make more you hav'nt heard me sing yet and all my mates are always ready for a bit of fun. You can always fall back to AC/DC played at full blast that will shift anybody

But then the Landlord comes over and kicks you out leaving the herberts still in the pub. Which is exactly what happens on a forum. The retaliator is always deemed to be more to blame than the instigator. Remove the instigator then the retaliator has nothing to retaliate to.

Why? I can think of quite a few members that rotate in and out due to their jobs. They have many of the same problems/concerns as full time residents. If anything, their concerns are often more imporatnt as they have to leave their families alone for long periods. I feel for those guys that worry about their spouses and kids. I think you are being a bit harsh.

2. telling someone to go use Google, is bad netiquette, out right rude

The proper solution is for a search engine knowledgeable member to put a link to Google with the search terms in it already. Not everyone is proficient in correctly identifying the best search terms to find what they want.

//edit - I see you got that suggestion in #3

You must be one very patient and kind hearted person.

Many of the questions that draw the "go and Google it" response are downright stupid requests. Those requests belie a laziness to make an effort. I do understand your point, but I draw your attention to the characteristics of some of the situations to which that particular response is directed.

@smokie36-thanks for the invite, I do look at the other local Forums at times, including the Samui Forum.

@jocko-yes that’s what I meant in point 1, if you do not like a post or topic thread, ignore it, move on, off to CNN.com or whatever else is open on your browser.

@goober/katasyd-not a rant as much as just hoping we can be more thoughtful before we post. Both my parents always used to say “think before you speak”. I sort of relate that here.

@Boo-I don’t feel too much has been antagonistic here, and yes I believe we are all aware of the “report” button, but does that button remind anyone else of the kid who used to always go tell the teacher ?

@KarenBravo –you’re always an ace in my hand for introducing me to Kallots.

@bangtaoboy/hongkongfooey-if you knew me in person, you would know I’m into brevity (unless a few drinks under my belt and telling a joke), this is probably the longest post I’ve ever done. Keep it brief bra.

@somtomforincation-thanks but if you would have seen the babe I was with last night, you’d know GOM got all the hugs he needed+, thus the play on your nic ;-)

Cheers everybody and have a great day !

I've been using various types of fora for about 14 years. They are a strange creature. It is possible to be extremely offended by a post because it's out there in front of a lot of people, rather than just those in earshot.

My lazy use of 'google is your friend' is not meant to be rude. It's taken me ages to learn to do a quick trawl there first - and not necessarily here. I should shortcut most of those by going straight to Wikipedia in many cases.

WRT the references to us Aussies: at the Byron Bay Bluesfest, we had a Finnish band playing. One member told us he had researched our history and learned that we (at least the non Indigenous people) are descended from convicts. He stopped, looked around at the beautiful day and said 'You can't have done anything too bad. Could have been transported to a far colder climate.'

What's a LMGTFY link?
