Christmas Eve Dinner At Hu'u

I had my first dinning experience at Hu'u tonight. I saw it mentioned a few places in the last week so I decided I would give it a shot.

Its located in Sathorn in the Asscott building. Its kind of in-between 2 BTS stations so it required a walk to get to. On the way there we ended up getting off at surasak which took about 10 mins to walk to the resturant even though the map on the website looks like its *RIGHT THERE* :o

First impressions: A nice clean cut resturant. Very dim lighting and nice furnature. The bottom floor is a nice lounge type bar. Seemed like a very realaxing environment. We chose to dine on the second floor.

There were only about 5 table occupied when we arrived at 8. They were spread out so we werent eating on top of other tables like some resturants I have been to. We opted for the special 4 course dinner with wine. 1999 baht a person.

The first course was duck. 4 small pieces served with some vegtable. The presentation was fabulous. This is one of those resturants that gives you a giant plate and arranges your food as if it is art. The duck was served cold, seemed odd at first but I really really enjoyed it. This also included the first glass of wine. I have no idea what it was though. Tasted like citra or something similar.

Next they served us tuna steaks and seaweed. These were also served cold and were amazing as well. The portion was a little larger and they also gave us an assortment of breads. They poured us another glass of wine even though I was still working on the first. They chief did an amazing job with this one. It is evident that he spend a great amount of time working on this dish.

Next came the main course, Venicen (spelling??) This was a large portion. They were very rare and very mouthwattering. He placed them on a bed of something red that included liccorish of all things. Seemed odd but it was fabulous. Also some onion/carrot arrangment. A glass of red wine helped us wind down thorugh this course.

For dessert they served us the best ice cream I have ever had and some kind of raisien cake thing.

The service was amazing. It seemed like we had 3 waiters working for us. Everyone is very kind and the atmosphere was very relaxing.

All in all it was a good holiday in bangkok.

Tell me what you guys did. I need ideas for the next big event!

Not much chance of putting Khall64au out of a job as a "Journalist" or "Restaurant reviewer" with that post Poorfalang :D But you do come a very close second according to some previous posts :o

"I had my first dinning experience at Hu'u tonight"

Are you trying to tell everyone that you have never eaten before, my god you must be a skinny man.

First impressions: A nice clean cut resturant.

So it is true, they did go ahead with the circumscision.

There were only about 5 table occupied when we arrived at 8. They were spread out so we werent eating on top of other tables like some resturants I have been to.

So you ended up eating off the floor with the other patrons.

This is one of those resturants that gives you a giant plate and arranges your food as if it is art. The duck was served cold, seemed odd at first but I really really enjoyed it.

Conversation from the kitchen "is that farang idiot sitting on the floor ready to eat yet" "probably, but lets keep him waiting a bit longer 'till the duck gets cold"

This also included the first glass of wine. I have no idea what it was though. Tasted like citra or something similar.

Further conversation from the kitchen "Im busting for a piss, give me that carafe pornchai"

Next they served us tuna steaks and seaweed.

"hey, arent you gonna clean that fish before you serve it" "Why?"

They poured us another glass of wine even though I was still working on the first. They chief did an amazing job with this one. It is evident that he spend a great amount of time working on this dish.

"I cant beleive this, I have to have another piss"

Next came the main course, Venicen (spelling??) This was a large portion. They were very rare and very mouthwattering. He placed them on a bed of something red that included liccorish of all things. Seemed odd but it was fabulous. Also some onion/carrot arrangment. .

"did the dog suffer pornchai?" "no i placed him on a bed of his own blood and stools"

A glass of red wine helped us wind down thorugh this course.

Back in the kitchen "I thought we ran out of wine" "we did"

For dessert they served us the best ice cream I have ever had and some kind of raisien cake thing.

"Hey pornchai, why you do that here, wait till you get home man"

Have you always been called 'poorfarang,' or did you just get that name after you paid the bill at Hu'u?

the bill was only about 4500 baht. Doesnt really break the bank. I take it you ate sticky rice for xmas dinner

You can take it any way you like.

My point was that Hu'u is laughably overpriced. Generally the place appeals to people who are too unsophisticated to distinguish between high prices and genuine quality.

Or maybe you just love 'venicen' (sic)..........

Well, I never actually saw a menu so I cant say if it is over priced or not. Judging by the clientel and general atmosphere id say you are probably right, im sure it is pricy.

For the christmas dinner we ate I thought it was a fair price. I dont eat at places like this often but I felt that it was a decent meal for the holidays. I know if I was back home in Chicago then I would have spent double that for dinner and probably ate a meal that I would have enjoyed much less.

Wow - Whats with all the criticism? I went there for christmas dinner and ate the special dinner they had prepared so looking at the menu was not an option because we had a 'set menu'

I thought I might share my experiences with some people but I guess I will just keep it to myself to avoid getting flammed here.

Not all the correspondance was critical do not give up hope.... the rules are simple ...nothing too controvertial , nothing to far away from beer , bars and girls , nothing too intelectual , nothing that may hint at a normal ,sane family life ,with simple family pleasures , problems , dreams and aspirations . A good percentage of the expats here consider they have moved on from that and escaped . Then they jump at the first chance they have of recreating it.... ruled primarily by the one eyed trouser snake then wonder why they are taken for a ride. I enjoyed your mail , and contributed in the same vein. I bothered to read what you had said and assumed that a set meal was on the special menu ..

Keep it normal ...do not give up hope or your values.... to enjoy a meal with friends and family and have a memory and an experience that lasted for a few hours for the price of a short time and a few beers and a bowl of noodles an experience that is 1 or 2 hours of boredom 3 minutes of Hopefull pleasure ( unless the expenses went up with the little blue pills then extend the time but not the pleasure)

Happy New Year to all including the flammers

Agreed with that fully rcalsop. Poorfarang, I've been to Hu u's both here and Legian Bali and both are excellent imho (mind you the one in Bali has a pool to cool off in which is a nice touch;) 4500 may seem a bit steep but as rcalsop mentioned, heck, it was Christmas dinner for pete's sake and a set menu to boot. Why not?

Glad you enjoyed it and thx for sharing your review on it. Don't let a few naysayers getcha down, post away :o
