Umar Patek, a leading member of the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah, apologized for the first time on Monday for his role in the 2002 Bali bombing that killed 202 people. Accused of building bombs for the attack, he told the victims and their families at his trial in Jakarta that he’d been against it from the start, but had been afraid to challenge more senior members of the group. Patek denies playing a major role in assembling the massive car bomb that went off outside two nightclubs packed with foreign tourists on Oct. 12, 2002, killing 88 Australians and seven Americans.
