Wife Has Been Scheduled For A Ct Scan - But Should We Change Hospitals?

The CT Scan has been scheduled later this week at Sukhumwit Hospital. I understand that CT scans are not particularly healthy and exposes the patient to a bit of radiation. For this purpose, I would like my wife to have her CT scan with the most up to date equipment to prevent an inconclusive result. I am not sure if they have it at Sukhumwit Hospital. Can anyone provide any recommendation about CT scan and where to go. Obviously we could just go to Bumrugrad but we do not want to overpay if not nessecary. The doctors have not yet mentioned anything about whether they will use contrast or not. She has been having stomach pains periodically for the last couple of months and they spotted a shadow somewhere during an ultrasound.

If concerned with radiation you might ask if MRI could be an alternative. But CAT is easier for patient and unless having other sources of radiation occasional use should be OK. Am not sure if much difference in levels or readability at different facilities.

I don't think there will be any significant difference in level of radiation exposure at different hospitals.

Your priority should be ensuring that she has the best doctors in terms of interpreting the findings and treating.

A bit of a long shot for you, but here is my recent experience in Singapore.

My wife recently had a Coronary CT Scan on a "Seimens 256 slice dual source Somaton Definition Flash CT Scanner".

Effective radiation dose was "3.8mSv".

The cost was (Sing $), first consultation = 90

Scan = 1200

follow up consulatation = 90

This was at a goverment hospital ( Tan Tock Seng).

We were informed that radiation from this particular machine was very low, but had to sign a consent form all the same.

Thankfully her heart is ok.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

From post #5 "Seimens 256 slice dual source Somaton Definition Flash CT Scanner"

The 256 slice is what you want, I use a 64 Slice in my work. The higher number generally will reduce dose (depends on what protocol is pre programed). Rule of thumb; You want an old technolgist and a new machine.
